Prairie chickens the topic Saturday at Glendalough

Published 11:01 a.m., March 27, 2009

You don't have to rise and shine before dawn to get the answers about prairie chickens. At 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 28, Doug Hedtke of the DNR will talk about prairie chickens at the Glendalough State Park Lodge, northeast of Battle Lake.

Hedtke, assistant wildlife manager for the Fergus Falls Area DNR, is a member of the Minnesota Prairie Chicken Society.

The sounds of spring are in the air with the resounding booms of

courting prairie chickens. People are willing to tramp out to a small blind before dawn just to watch these birds put on their ritualistic mating show.

The program on Saturday at Glendalough Park will also include a video of the prairie chicken on their lek (booming grounds) and information on how people can reserve their own observation blinds at no charge — to see the birds performing live.

No advance registration is required. For more information call the park at 218-864-0110.
