Larson named to ServeMinnesota board

Former State Sen. Cal Larson, Fergus Falls, is one of two people named by Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty to the ServeMinnesota Commission, also known as the Minnesota Commission on National and Community Service
Larson an the other appointee, David Metzen of Sunfish Lake, were named to complete three-year terms that expire on Aug. 1, 2010.
Larson served in the Minnesota Senate from 1987 through 2006 and in the Minnesota House from 1967 through 1974. He currently serves on the Seaway Port Authority of Duluth and has represented Minnesota on the Great Lakes Commission for 12 years. He replaces James Pederson on the commission as a representative of older adults.
Metzen is the new director of the Minnesota Office of Higher Education. He is a former two-term member of the University of Minnesota Board of Regents and was that group’s chairman from 2003 to 2005. He was superintendent of the South St. Paul School District from 1982 to 2000. Metzen replaces Susan Heegaard on the commission as a representative of higher education.
The commission coordinates volunteer learning service programs and administers the youth works grant program and the federal Americorps program. It is made up of 25 members, including 24 appointed by the governor, plus four ex-officio legislative members.
