Lower speed limits proposed on roads
Published 12:00 p.m., May 13, 2009
Drivers on two county state aid highways (CSAH) may have to slow down for lower speed limits after studies are completed by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT).
The Otter Tail County Board unanimously approved the speed zone studies Tuesday. The county board must approve the studies before MnDOT can complete them.
The city of Deer Creek is requesting a study of CSAH 50, which is currently 50 miles per hour. The city would like the speed limit to be lowered, county Highway Engineer Rick West said.
The city of Fergus Falls has requested a study of CSAH 27, located north of the city. The city was petitioned by a group of residents who would like to have the speed limit lowered. Their concern is lowered visibility on a crest of a hill on the road. The highway is currently 55 miles per hour. West estimated that MnDOT will study the road from Fir Avenue North to a half mile north of the intersection of CSAH 27 and Woodland Drive.
Commissioner John Lindquist questioned whether lowering the speed limits would be successful in decreasing the speed of the vehicles on the roads.
“Traffic signs don’t control traffic,” West responded. The driver decides at what speed to travel and enforcement is needed, he added.
When county staff receive calls from residents about excessive speeding on a road, enforcement is stepped up. The added enforcement causes people to drive slower on the road for a few weeks before increasing their speed again, West said.

That CR27 hill crest does seem kinda perilous.

Well going from 55 to 30 while coming down the steepest hill around seems a little stupid. Posting 45 on the hill and 30 after the hill would be a little better.
Good luck getting people to stay under 55 going out of town though! Its not even possible in the winter you need the running start!
Has there even been any problems (accidents) because of the hillcrest???

I agree that the limit should be lowered by Deer Creek, the speed limit there has always seemed excessive to me.
the hill crest limit is fine the way it is.
I'd like to see the limit increased back over by the coke plant and shoremaster.
