Underwood key to Green's success

Published 06:00 a.m., May 24, 2009

Judging by Wesley Green’s high school experience, his past four years have been anything but boring.

He’s served as the varsity football captain, class president, vice president, a member of the Knowledge Bowl team and was voted Homecoming King for the 2008-09 school year. And that’s just the beginning.

He’s also spent the past few years as a Post Secondary Education Opportunity Student at Minnesota State Community College - Fergus Falls, where he’s been a member of Mu Alpha Theta and Phi Theta Kappa honors societies, not to mention academic accomplishments at both the high school and the college.

He acknowledges Underwood’s top quality education as a main factor in his success.

“It was great that I went to a small school rather than a large school,” Green said. “There’s more one-on-one attention and it was a little more personal with teachers.”

Although Green has kept himself busy, he’s also made time for friends — something he considers to be a top priority.

“The most fun we always have is with our classmates, usually at the lunch table — being able to see friends in the hallway everyday and joke around all day,” he said. “It’s kind of sad to know that I don’t have to go back anymore.” In fact, Green plans to continue those friendships beyond high school. As a start, he and classmate Todd Skauge, along with his brother Jared Green, are heading to Europe a few days following graduation. Their trip, in part, was inspired by a German foreign exchange student who spent a year with the Green family.

“When he was here, we had always talked about how we’d love to travel over to Europe, maybe for graduation to kick-off the end of the year,” he said.

And that’s exactly what the boys intend to do. Before spending time in Germany, they’ll make a stop in London for a few days. Next year, Green has his sights set on North Dakota State University, where he plans to pursue a degree in mechanical engineering.

“I want to do something with clean energy, green energy or mass transit,” he said. To make that happen, he plans on taking on internships, working hard, and staying as long as it takes get the education he needs to succeed.
