What is this?
Support local fireworks
Published 12:00 p.m., May 28, 2009
There’s nothing like the Fourth of July. Family comes to town. There are picnics in the park. And a few miles up Highway 59 there’s one heck of a Fourth of July parade in Erhard.
All are great Fergus Falls area traditions.
So is the annual fireworks display, scheduled for Friday, July 3 at the Otter Tail County Fairgrounds.
People come from all around so they can have a good viewing point at dusk when the first fireworks are fired in Fergus Falls.
But that longstanding tradition could very well be in jeopardy.
Budget cuts and economic challenges being what they are, it has become unrealistic for the city to foot the bill for fireworks. So civic leaders turned to its residents and local businesses to help fund a 20-minute fireworks show.
But there has been a problem with that plan in that fundraising has fallen very short.
To ensure a fireworks show takes place in Fergus Falls this summer like the one in 2008 a minimum of $15,000 must be raised by Friday, May 29. As of Wednesday morning, just $1,500 was raised.
But there is still time to step up and ensure a fireworks show can be held.
To become a corporate sponsor, contact Lisa Litt at American National Bank, 218-739-3221. Donations can also be made online at ci.fergus-falls.mn.us.
It would sure be a shame to have to drive to Detoit Lakes, Alexandria, or Moorhead to take in a fireworks show this Fourth of July.
