Cub Scouts work to recruit members

Published 12:00 p.m., November 3, 2009

Cub Scout Recruitment Day, Saturday at DeLagoon Park south of Fergus Falls, was lots of fun for the boys and grownups, as well.

“Each boy built a rocket out of a plastic pop bottle, using duct tape to attach cardboard wings,” said scout adult volunteer Doug Hansen. “Then each boy placed his rocket on a pvc pipe and used compressed air to launch the rocket which soared over 60 feet in the air.”

The launch pad was a popular place for the boys on Saturday.

“Later,” said Hansen, “the boys had an opportunity to launch an Estes Rocket which is propelled with a sulfur-charged engine and a battery-operated launch control. These rockets have a second ignition which pops out the nose cone and a parachute when the rocket reaches several hundred feet.”

The boys also enjoyed a campfire, smores, and hot chocolate.

Cub Scouts is for boys in first through fifth grade interested in learning and having fun outdoors.

“New fall recruitment resources are here, and this campaign is designed to motivate more young people to join scouting,” said Hansen. “Parents recognize that Cub Scouting and Boy Scouting are programs to help mold tomorrow’s leaders.”

Hansen and other scout leaders in the Fergus Falls area, and throughout Otter Tail County, say the essence of scouting is clear and best expressed by the 12 principles of the Scout Law: Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean and Reverent.

“These truly are words to live by,” said Hansen. “They differentiate scouting from all other activities for kids. Cub Scouting is great in that it involves the entire family.”
