Donation goes to Salvation Army youth
Published 12:00 p.m., November 3, 2009
The Salvation Army's youth programs were awarded $1,000 from USBank on Tuesday. Funds will support the After School Program, Character Building classes and Summer Camp programs, serving children from all backgrounds. These programs teach proper social skills, encourage healthy habits, and assist in positive character development.
On a daily basis, children in the after-school program and day camp receive a meal, homework help, access to computers, I-Q program, art classes,
physical and social activities and dance classes. A 16-week Literacy
Program was added which resulted in the students increasing at least one
reading level per completed course.
"There are currently 22 children registered for our after school program,” said Youth Director Lynne Verhaagh, "With additional staff, we could easily double that number.”
Many of these children's families are struggling because of complex social issues such as substance abuse, alcoholism, loneliness and mental illness.
“We also provide the parents an avenue to get connected with other community resources,” said Verhaagh.
Corps Ministry Intern Melinda Tripp said that most people agree that
youth are the key to our nation’s future.
“By offering youth the opportunities to develop physical and social skills in a supervised setting,” said Tripp, “The Salvation Army helps children grow into confident and mature adults."
Representing USBank during Tuesday’s check presentation at the Salvation Army was Matt Holmquist, branch manager for USBank, Fergus Falls.
“Investing in our youth is one of the best things we can do here in the Fergus Falls area,” said Holmquist.
Since 1893, The Salvation Army has provided social and spiritual
services to the Fergus Falls area and surrounding communities. Its mission
is to give people purpose and, in the words of volunteers, “hearts hope and souls redemption.”
