Robertson recovering from bowhunt accident
Published 12:00 p.m., November 11, 2009
Mike Robertson, 54, of Fergus Falls, is recovering from a fall Friday evening, Oct. 30, while bowhunting at Mineral Lake, east of Dalton. He sustained multiple rib fractures, a tear in the spleen, a punctured lung, fractured wrist and a bone chip in the hip that was dislocated.
Coming down, out of a tree, he placed his foot on a branch that broke and he fell 20 feet to the ground. Robertson didn’t have his cell phone and was on the ground for close to two hours.
His wife, Mary, was concerned when he hadn’t come home, and called their friend, Gene Field, who went to Mineral Lake with Mike’s son-in-law, Dan Johnson. They were able to locate Robertson.
They called emergency personnel. The Dalton Fire and Rescue Squad came to Robertson’s rescue with a four wheeler since muddy conditions precluded getting an ambulance to the scene of the accident. Robertson was taken to Lake Region Hospital Hospital where he works as an R.N., and later was transported to St. Cloud Hospital.
“Dr. Williams was out of town on vacation, so that’s why Mike was transported to the St. Cloud Hospital for orthopedic care,” said his mother, Virginia.
She said that Mike will have wrist surgery today (Wednesday) and he might be able to be back in Fergus Falls later this week, if all goes well.
Art Stortroen of Fergus Falls, a member of the local Deer Hunters Association, has been following Robertson’s progress through CaringBridge, as have others.
After examination by specialists and having c.t. scans, it was determined that Robertson’s hip had a small bone chip. This wasn’t expected to affect mobility. However, his hip did become dislocated somewhere along the way.
“That was very painful to Mike, as well as the broken ribs,” said Stortroen.
As of Sunday, Nov. 8, following various medical procedures, Robertson continued to show progress while getting stronger in recovery. During physical therapy he stood and took small steps, still not bearing weight on his left hip.
“Our entire family is very appreciative of the support from many people,” said his mother, Virginia.
