Pet grooming goes on the road
Published 12:00 p.m., November 16, 2009
An Underwood woman with a love of animals is bringing her grooming business on the road.
Ellen Schulze is the owner of Ellen’s Mobile Grooming, a newly-created business that brings Schulze to the homes of local dog owners. A nurse of 30 years, Schulze grew tired of mounting paperwork and decided to follow a dream she’d had for years: to open her own grooming business.
“This was a big career change for me,” she said.
A long-time pet owner, Schulze said she wanted to fill a niche in the local grooming market.
“I thought having a mobile service could fill another need in the community,” she said.
So after quitting her job, Schulze attended grooming school in Minneapolis for three months over the summer. After some research online, she was able to acquire a small trailer equipped with a grooming table, a tub, a vacuum and a window near her work station. The trailer, which boasts heating and air conditioning, can be plugged into Schulze’s home at night or into the home of a customer.
From her trailer, Schulze provides full-service grooming, from bathing to nail-clipping to ear-cleaning. The price varies depending on the size of the dog and how much grooming is involved, though many dogs run around $40.
“I’m not charging extra to come to your home,” she said.
Schulze said she sees the mobile service as particularly valuable to elderly dog owners or people who cannot leave their homes. Schulze is accustomed to being on the road, as her job as a nurse and respiratory therapist brought her to homes around the area.
Ellen’s Mobile Grooming has been up and running since late September. Schulze said she’s visited animal hospitals in Fergus Falls and Battle Lake as a way of spreading the word about her business. While the start-up is a risk, Schulze says life is too short to spend in a job you don’t enjoy.
