Check valve policy approved

Published 07:26 a.m., November 18, 2009

The Fergus Falls City Council has approved a policy designed to assist residents with severe sewer back-ups.

The policy would allow the city to purchase and install a sewer backflow check valve for certain properties susceptible to sanitary sewer back-ups. The city would install or arrange for the installation of the check valve, while the property owner would be responsible for maintenance, inspection, repairs and replacement.

According to Public Works Director Anne Martens, most of the qualifying properties are adjacent to major lift stations. City staff would implement the policy on a case by case basis, with the cost to the city at about $1,000 per property.
