City to acquire RTC roadway
Published 07:23 a.m., November 18, 2009
The city of Fergus Falls is expected to take ownership of State Highway 297 following a forthcoming agreement with the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT).
The highway, which runs through the Regional Treatment Center (RTC), is one of Minnesota’s shortest state highways, according to city staff. A turnback agreement between the city and Mn/DOT would transfer ownership of the road to the city, which already owns the RTC and surrounding land.
According to City Engineer Dan Edwards, as part of the agreement, Mn/DOT would provide $275,000 in turnback funds for mill and overlay work to the road. The road could be transferred to the city as soon as next year, while the turnback funds would be available in 2012.
On Monday the Fergus Falls City Council authorized a memorandum of understanding with Mn/DOT that sets the stage for the two parities to prepare a turnback agreement. The final agreement will need to be approved by the Legislature.
