Dalton teen home before resuming cross-country run

Published 04:27 p.m., November 18, 2009

A local 16-year-old who began a cross-country running trip in September is in Dalton this week recovering from a stress fracture.

Jasmine Jordan left Palm Springs, Calif., Sept. 1 with the goal of running to New York City by next spring. A junior at Ashby School, Jordan planned to complete classes online as she ran to raise awareness about the lack of health insurance among truckers.

In a July interview, Jordan said she was running in honor of Sheila Grothe, a Dalton woman who worked for the family’s trucking and pilot car business, Jordan Enterprises. Grothe, who was unable to obtain health insurance, died of cancer in April at age 38.

Jordan began the trip with her stepfather, Lee, who rode alongside the teenager in one of the family’s pilot cars. Jordan ran 638 miles before she suffered a stress fracture in New Mexico about four weeks ago, according to her mother. Paulette Jordan insisted her daughter come home to recuperate.

“She’s got running in her blood so much that she didn’t want to stop,” she said.

In the time she’s been home, Jordan has been attending classes at Ashby School and spending time with her brother. She was scheduled to revisit an orthopedic surgeon Thursday, and depending on the outcome of that meeting, Jordan may be back on the road next week, her mother said.

The remainder of the route will take Jordan across Texas, north through Arkansas and Tennessee and along the East Coast. The teenager’s original goal was to arrive in New York City by April 17, the one-year anniversary of Grothe’s death.

For Jordan’s mother, the most important thing is that her daughter arrives at her destination in good health.

“It’s not a race. It’s an accomplishment,” Paulette Jordan said.

Jordan has already been featured by television stations in Palm Springs, Phoenix, Ariz., and Las Cruses, N.M. For more on Jordan’s run and her cause, St. Christopher Truckers Relief Fund, visit www.runwithjazzy.com.
