A solution to a traffic issue

Published 12:00 p.m., November 18, 2009

It almost never fails: Solve one problem and it just leads to another.

In this case, the problem many years ago was all the truck traffic that rumbled through Fergus Falls on Highway 210. The solution: Build a bypass that routes that traffic around town on the Interstate. The new problem: It can at times be devilishly difficult make a safe left turn from Highway 210 onto Pebble Lake Road during what passes for rush hour in our town.

The Highway 210-Pebble Lake Road traffic issue got some lift last week when the county commissioners learned that a state Department of Transportation Study had found there isn’t enough traffic at the intersection to warrant signal lights.

I sympathize with those who have to wait and wait and wait to turn onto Pebble Lake Road. For most of the past 20 years I have had to execute a similar maneuver after work each day – a left turn off Channing onto Pebble Lake Road. At times it seems like there will never be a break in the traffic, especially on Friday evenings in the summer. And when there’s a little snow or ice in the intersection, making that turn is often a white-knuckle experience.

But I also know that, except for those particular times, it’s seldom much trouble turning onto Pebble Lake Road.

So MnDOT’s conclusion about 210 and Pebble Lake makes sense. In truth, there is only a traffic problem for a couple of hours at day around the morning drive, evening drive and lunch time. The rest of the time, that intersection is not so bad. And, so, stop lights may not make sense. Here’s why. For a couple of hours, the lights would do their job and make it easier for drivers to get on and off Pebble Lake Road. Then things would quiet down and the lights would probably show a steady green for vehicles on Pebble Lake – except when a car approached on 210. Each time that happened, the lights would cut over to amber and red, halting traffic on Pebble Lake so that single car on 210 could get across. But it would all be a waste, because the cross-traffic wouldn’t have encountered any significant delay from the stop sign system that’s in place now.

So for three hours a day of benefit, we’d have 21 hours of annoyance – not to mention all the fuel wasted by the traffic on Pebble Lake Road that would have to stop, then get back up to speed again.

Four-way stops would be worse, because they force everyone to stop all the time. Again, it’s a waste of fuel and, for most vehicles most of the time, a needless annoyance. Consider the supposedly temporary four-way stop on 210West near Wal-Mart. At 6 a.m., for instance, almost all the traffic through that intersection is east- or west-bound, but forced to stop because there’s a four-way sign that is useful during other parts of the day. What a waste.

One solution for the Pebble Lake and Highway 210 intersection might be a traffic circle. Long popular in Europe, they’re now starting to show up in American cities. And although they take up a lot of space, there might be enough land available at Pebble Lake and 210. Most likely traffic circles are expensive – lots of concrete, lots of earth moving required.

But if the other solutions – a two-way stop, a four-way stop and signal lights – don’t quite make sense, maybe the non-traditional option is actually the best.

Apperently Mr. Churchill is not aware of the history of the highway 210 Redwood Lane intersection. There have been to fatal accident's at that intersection and one near fatal (the doctors didn't think the victim would survive the transport to Merit Care but she supprised them). There have also been multiple "minor" accidents at that intersection, safety is the concern not a minor incoveinence.
I do like your logic about the two or three hours a day traffic on Pebble Lake Road because if we apply it to West Lincoln that will never have to be made a Four lane!

If the traffic circles at Highway 210 and Pebble Lake Road would be anything like the traffic circles in Washington, good luck to all drivers of 18 wheelers and Beyers tow vehicles trying to maneuver the circle. Traffic circles are very confusing. Traffic lights the best idea! I have attempted to drive through that intersection also. I am aware of the challenges to drive across the intersection safely.

Traffic circles are not confusing unless a circle seems complicated. Grand Rapids Minnesota has turning circles and they work fine without problems and traffic moves smoothly efficiently. That does not mean they would work here. This is Fergus Falls. Here we would approach a turning circle in reverse, stop mid-circle for a chat with a consultant from Minneapolis, then have a facilitator critique our driving style.

Posted by Callie25 (anonymous) on November 18, 2009 at 3:46 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Traffic circles are not confusing at all and they move traffic very efficiently. No doubt, however, that drivers in FF would have a difficult time maneuvering them since so many drivers can't even see where they are going.

How about a overpass??? The topographics (lay of the land)of that area are condusive to this!!! Traffic would flow and not have a Mn State Highway stopping for a city/county street! There is plenty of right of way to do this!! The bypass should have been designed this way in the begining.... The idea was to not have TRUCK traffic going thru downtown, but now we have made a mess of traffic and people have lost their lives!!!!

Posted by Mel (anonymous) on November 18, 2009 at 5:13 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hi Goldie, I mentioned a bridge (overpass if you will) in another letter, It would work well.
Now about the lights, have the lights work as normal, green and red for the rush hours and then flash yellow for pebble lake rd. and flash red for hwy. 210 during low traffic times.
I like the circle idea and there is plenty of space to put it in. Could be made large enough for large trucks.

Posted by HDRDMF (anonymous) on November 18, 2009 at 5:38 p.m. (Suggest removal)

the traffic circle will never work in this town, most of the people are not capable of making use of the right turn lane and the idea of merging on to peble lake road. better yet lets put a figure 8 setup out there and some cameras to record the adventures.

We can't let 210 east end up a death trap like 210 west out by Mabel Murphys and Walmart. I think a 4 way stop there would be a great idea but I know it's spendy. What isn't these days, but doesn't LIFE count?

Posted by wwjdt (anonymous) on November 18, 2009 at 11:19 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Traffic circles a.k.a. Roundabouts, are a very efficient and easy way to maneuver the flow of traffic. There is one south of West Fargo on County Highway 17.

Posted by otterdaddy (anonymous) on November 19, 2009 at 8:01 a.m. (Suggest removal)

There are several roundabouts in Minnesota. The one in Monticello by the high school is a lifesaver. People who think that they are confusing also think that turn lanes are confusing.

First of all, this is a one-minute rush hour Town. Where in this Town do you need to travel in less that 10 minutes and cannot get there - even though MANY leave 5 minutes before their appointment! The one-minute rush hour and the people who do not use the left and right turn lanes are the visitors from outside the city limits. So let's chase EVERYONE away - they have already take our jobs.

"The one-minute rush hour and the people who do not use the left and right turn lanes are the visitors from outside the city limits."

Do you mean all those farmers who bring most of the cash flow into Fergus Falls and also pay taxes into the FF School District? Horrors!

Interesting topic - I was thinking that we'd get another 7th-grade book report this week.

Most of you people are lucky if you drive 1000 miles a month

I drive 10,000 miles a month every month as a big trucker.

We call you people 4 wheelers for a reason. You absolutely cant wait your turn..You speed up on a person who wants to change lanes in front of you..You choose to pass a car or truck with just enough time to then exit the freeway by crossing the median line.

Instead of slowing down and getting behind the car or truck that is about to pass that freeway exit

You expect freeway traffic to move over as you try to enter from an onramp with 1 hand full of a cellphone and one hand on the steering wheel. AS YOU FORGOT the law that you learned in drivers ed that states you shall not enter the freeway if doing so impedes the flow of traffic. You Are to yield the right of way. and yet we truckers see you 4 wheelers end up driving on the median because you tried to force your way in.

God knows you have forgotten that a turn signal is a courtesy warning of your intention. As you either never use one period or you use it 5 seconds before you exit

A four way stop teaches patience and tolerance.

What would be perfect for that area would be a part time flasher system.

yellow for pebble lake and red for 210. but with the ability to convert to a regular light if 2 or more cars are stuck on 210 and trigger the metal detector after 60 seconds.

BUT a four way stop would be cheaper and the one in front of wal mart has been a god send for us trucks.

As we no longer have to worry about idiot 4 wheelers speeding up and then locking up when we are in the middle of a left turn out of wal mart.LIKE THEY USED TO DO WITH REGULARITY.

The caps are necessary

Posted by FindTheTruth (anonymous) on November 20, 2009 at 12:11 p.m. (Suggest removal)

And all truckers are perfect drivers, LOL.

Posted by BWD (David Adams) on November 20, 2009 at 12:34 p.m. (Suggest removal)

If you have not driven a Big Rig, don't be diss'en the truckers. And yes, they are more highly trained to drive than most 4-wheelers and their driving test is not something most drivers would want to take or could pass for that matter.

No not all truck drivers are perfect, but it not a perfect world out there.

Posted by mgordansons (Marty Gordansons) on November 20, 2009 at 12:35 p.m. (Suggest removal)

tbaarr, finally we hear from a trucker who parks at Wall-Mart. Your 18 wheelers are a danger in that parking lot. You park so that it is like driving around a building to see around and exit the parking lot. Get out of there. You are creating a problem.

BTW, you have to pull to the left lane if a vehicle is approaching the freeway if a vehicle is entering on an entrance ramp.

FYI, I have been a passenger with my husband off and on for many years in an 18 wheeler and I know what I am talking about.

Posted by ffprofessor (anonymous) on November 22, 2009 at 10:49 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I wouldn’t take too much of what tbaar says very seriously. His past comments show that he can not tell the difference between a liberal and a conservative and here he shows that he does not know what a “median” is.
BTW, chuck, the “median” is the grassy area between the opposing lanes of traffic. The roadway you reference above is the “shoulder”.

Posted by tbaarr (chuck weber) on November 22, 2009 at 10:51 a.m. (Suggest removal)

hey m gordensons

YOU DO NOT HAVE TO PULL TO THE LEFT LANE IF A VEHICLE IS TRYING TO ENTER THE FREEWAY

better retake your drivers test loser

AND you better not do that in OHIO OR PENN OR NEW YORK as you will get a ticket

YOU ARE NOT ONLY WRONG YOU COMPOUND IT BY BEING STUPID enough to defend your mistaken belief. CHECK the law not your belief system.

There is a yield sign on all freeway on ramps for a bloody reason

The only reason we ever pulled over was that it was a courtesy

except your loser butt ignores it because you are on your cell phone

And if Parked vehicle is a danger then you better retake driving school if you cant avoid a stationary object.

And we park there with Wal marts permission in the exact area where wal mart states we should park

Hey Find the truth I never said all 18 wheelers are great drivers

There are some that I have personally called 911 on because they are so agressive and unsafe.

Posted by tbaarr (chuck weber) on November 22, 2009 at 10:57 a.m. (Suggest removal)

I still stand by my belief THat a 4 way stop is now necessary at 210 and pebblelake road.

the traffic coming into town on pebble lake would then be forced to stop instead of breezing into town at 45 mph and you only have about a mile or 2 from the point where the speed limit increased from 30 to 35 leaving town on pebble lake. how much can 4 stinking signs cost 200 each maybe. they need one for the left turn lane each way and 1 for the right lane each way. can 800 bucks be compared to 1 human life saved or 1 accident averted. BUT the council is too busy spending millions on a hockey area

hey F F O professor ANONYMOUS BECAUSE YOUR AFRAID to let people know who you are. The right side median is the cement or or other hard road surface area marked by a solid painted line

Its also referred to as the emergency pull off zone or a shoulder

but then your too lame to read the road manual definitions.

As for being a liberal I have no problem supporting that party because they have not handed us 2 back to back recessions

unlike your precious repunk party 81-88 gave us recession

2001-2008 a ten times worse recession

tbaarr, you probably have a LOT of road rage judging by your shouting responses here.

You Are obligated to go to the left lane in MN when possible if a vehicle is approaching the freeway in the right hand lane. Go back to driving school or ask any MN DOT official about it! You do not have your facts straight and you might be a danger on the road.

Posted by ffprofessor (anonymous) on November 22, 2009 at 3:07 p.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey Weber, I’m sorry you consider yourself a liberal, as a matte of fact I suspect you are a conservative at heart posing as an obnoxious juvenile liberal just to make other people angry at liberals. You are a right wing jerk who knows neither driving rules nor political philosophy.

You said “There is a yield sign on all freeway on ramps for a bloody reason”, wrong again, on some ramps there is a “merge” sign, thus requiring other autos to move left if possible to allow others to enter the roadway.

Your anger here over some comments in indicative of a person who can not or will not control himself nor his rage on the highway. I don’t think you should be driving a go-cart, let alone an eighteen wheeled semi.

BTW I doubt Chuck Weber is your real name either.

NO FFO prof I am not but you go right ahead and think what you wish

because your words are as meaningless as as ice box would be to an eskimo

AND Mgordanson you just stated the operative term

WHEN POSSIBLE

you forget that its not always safe to change lanes

you forget that there might be someone who is in the left lane not speeding up or slowing down when they see your left signal

but you probably are the jerk who still tries to force their way on even when the right lane has a truck in it

You are also probably the jerk just like the profunker is

who does not have the brains to figure out that if there is 100 feet to the end of the entrance ramp

and you are right next to a 65 mph governed truck you can mash it and pass that truck easily

after all you have a 200-300hp eng and a 2-4k car

i have a 600hp eng but my rig weighs 80k

but no

your dumb idea is to stay at a steady and expect me to move over

EVEN THOUGH I CANT because i have a car on my left that you cant see

THAT WONT MOVE

I gues you now will say I should break hard and possibly cause the guy behind me to hit me

so your dummbness can enter the freeway

Posted by tbaarr (chuck weber) on November 23, 2009 at 12:37 a.m. (Suggest removal)

Hey mgordanson this is from the link provided by JRJJ

ITS SUPPORTS EXACTLY WHAT I STATED NOT what you stated

what a surprise hey FFO PROF read this too if you have the guts to admit your wrong again

Entering the Freeway

Entry ramps are provided for getting onto state freeways. These are short, one-way traffic ramps that allow you to enter the freeway easily and safely.

Once you reach the end of the entry ramp you will come to a special acceleration lane. This lane will allow you to increase speed enough to match that of other traffic already on the freeway. Watch for an opening in the nearest traffic lane. When you spot one, merge smoothly into the lane of traffic. Remember to use your turn signal soon enough to allow other traffic to see where you are going so they may adjust accordingly. Drivers on the freeway should allow you room to merge,

++++ but you are the one required to yield if they do not.+++

Do not stop on the ramp or in the acceleration lane unless absolutely necessary.

Ah yes, truckers. Angels of the road. Falsifying log books. Driving too many hours while taking speed/meth. Leaving their blown tire debris all over the highway for others to hit. Peeing into a bottle, and then throwing it into the ditch. Running overweight, and destroying our roads. Driving too fast in wet or snowy conditions. Farm trucks leaving mud all over the roads. The list goes on ......

Hey tbaarr, you have already proved you do not know the difference between a liberal and a conservative and you don’t know where the median is. Now in the face of written proof you show that you can not read.
You are indeed thirteen years old, and should have your driving privileges revoked.

No ffo prof you have proved nothing but that you are a useless baiter

you baited jaime when you stated you were pro council and for the ice rink

you are a typical loser who's only purpose is to create problems

tbaarr, you Definitely have an anger problem and you blame everyone else for what happens on the highway. You hate "four wheelers" and I have no doubt that they have encounter problems with you because of your attitude toward them. You think you own the highway and everyone else is against you. Its all in your head and you need to adjust your thinking in order to get rid of your anger and preconceived judgments about other people. hey gordens I hate four wheelers that fit the descriptions I gave

those are 4 wheeler

the rest is your fantasy

just like the fantasy you have that truckers or any car driver must change lanes to let a person merge on

sweet peas be sure to join the Master Baiter club with the prof and m gordens you probably can even do it in a circle

just like m gordens who insists on only reading the first line again which says drivers should allow you to merge

the word should does not mean require

except in Mgordens magically magnifying master baiter mind

the statement directly after is the only requirement

IT says you the car attempting to merge must yield to the freeway traffic . If they dont allow you to merge. That is the only requirement and thats what I have stated all along

finally find the truth

the 4 wheelers I refer to are the impatient lot who now whine about the stop signs at wal mart and they whine about trucks parked at wallyworld and they will really whine if they do put safety ahead of rush hour traffic and put a four way stop at pebble lake and the 210

feel free to call me a ranter as I dont give a rats pitutee about the opinions of Baiters.

Baiters being the ones who simply try endlessly to stir up discontent.

Then there are the Master Baiters here

you may notice that they are all ANNY too
this article was about wasting money building an unnecessary traffic circle.

the writer churchill has obviously never seen a circle with a flipped SUV or a couple of crunched cars because they hit ice in the circle and lost control and flipped.
