Rate increase approved
Published 07:19 a.m., November 18, 2009
The Fergus Falls City Council has approved an increase in utility rates, to be effective Feb. 1.
The change means the majority of Fergus Falls residents will see a roughly $28 increase in their annual utility rates. According to Finance Director Bill Sonmor, the increase is a result of changes in the city’s water, sewer and stormwater funds, and the need to budget for future utility improvements.
The flat rate for 5/8-inch water meters will increase by $1, while the flow rate for sewer services will increase by 21 cents. Stormwater services will increase by 25 cents for residential property, 50 cents for commercial.
According to Sonmor, about 84 percent of the city’s residential customers will see an increase of $2.30 per month, bringing the total to $27.60 over the course of a year.
The rate increases were proposed by city staff earlier this month and approved by the city council Monday.

Excellent timing! This was actually one of my first statements when they started pushing the new arena (raising our City utility bill). I am glad to see that I have at least a little bit of foresite. Thank you for boosting my self confidence Fergus Falls! I am also glad to know that you fully intend to use this money for future ultility improvements. I will look forward to seeing them.

Wow, you both just have one track minds don't you. It's always, Arena this, arena that. Get over it, it's going to happen, so if you don't like it, take your negitivity somewhere else. ( I hear fargo has an opening for village idiot) Go cry to someone who cares. Way to go city council for taking steps forward for our city!

Fargo may have an opening, the village idiot position here is occupied by Born2bfree who thinks the way forward is by paying increased taxes.

I must say that born2befree sure is sharing his chair of village idiot with 7 others who occupy council seats. And yes when it comes to this arena, I am sure that many people have one track minds, This was a blatant slap in the face to the tax paying residents of fergus falls by the city council. Just like the council before them with the bigwood event center, You say this is taking steps forward, Really, Personally I think it is taking steps backwards with the economy in shambles, unemployment rate near 10% which is expected to hit as high as 12% this winter, and you think now is the time to build a monstrocity for a select few people. You're about a crazy as John Strauch. You hold no merit Born2befree. A joke, a typical democrat who thinks the way to fix everything is to spend spend spend, and raise taxes on anything and everyone. Get a life, a real job, and House payment and have your taxes go up by 80% over the past two years. Then when you wonder where else you are going to cut corners, decide if this ice monstrocity was really worth it, and really stepping forward.
You are a Joke

they should never closed the insane asylum as the council could have their meetings in a padded room and at least the results might be understandable.

Good Grief! Arena opposers need to take off their blinders for a few seconds a day and get a glimpse of rest of the world they live in. This is a very small increase in our rates. Compare it to every other cost of living increase we've had over the past couple of years. Do you think you can get the same services without paying more? Do you think the city is getting rich or making enough money to pay for that new arena by adding $2.30 a month to our bills? One has nothing to do with the other.

The fact that the city is finally doing something to attract new and young people to the city is great. The city council should do everything in their power to attract all the new business it can to make it a more appealing city. When you compare FF to other MN cities comparable in size, like Bemidji, we don't size up at all. FF can't hold a candle to all the activities that Bemidji does for it's community members. There is something wrong with that.

here we go again. the ice palace will not alone motivate people to move to town.

Gee outside observer, you must live in a 35,000 home and not be a fergus falls business owner because 2.30 would be awesome. But even that does not rectify what the city council did and how they went about doing it.

Uh - gee, Fighting Otter - uh, no, but uh - I can read. Let me try this for you one more time, go slowly so you don't get hurt: "According to Sonmor, about 84 percent of the city’s residential customers will see an increase of $2.30 per month, bringing the total to $27.60 over the course of a year."

In return let me go really slow for you there high speed. This is all based on an average home valued at 100.000 and what we were told at the meeting was that it was roughly going to be 68.00 per year for a home valued at 100,000. So hey dumbarse, You must live in the axel nelson apartments huh? Some of us live in homes valued at a bit more than that, and some of us have a small business in town, Of course some of us are smart and have chosen to put our homes on the market and move more business's away from your corrupt little mini-government.
Hope I didn't strain your brain there, I realize you probably went to school here in Fergus Falls, and so of course I will forgive your ignorance and Math Skills.

This is a UTILITY rate increase, and has nothing to do with the property tax increase for the arena. 2 completely different things.

okay high speed, we know this is a utility increase. Do you really think they need it, probably not, but they will have to start thinking about bills that will be coming with the montstrocity, and how to pay for those said bills, and therfore one easy way to pay for those bills is to increase the rates for everyone. You see I normally wouldn't have a problem with an increase in bills for the city however when i drive by and see four city workers watching one city worker actually do the work on any given project on any given day, well then i start to think there is a problem. Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of jokes that go around the construction trade about how some people must be (_________) fill in the blank with city, county, union, or state workers, because whenever three or four people watch one person work, and they are all getting paid to do so, well that in itself is a misuse of city funds. But everyone in the city, county, and state even unions know that this goes on, its a common joke, and we all get it, but it doesn't mean i want to pay for it as well.

Now that the arena is coming (so far) watch the property values take a unusually high jump.

Are you sure you can even sell a house in town now? I know of people moving out of town, even more who are planning to sell and others who have already moved to Moorhead, Fargo, etc.
