Battle Lake school considers refinancing debt

The Battle Lake School Board heard arguments for refinancing the district debt during a recent board meeting.
Springsted Incorporated, a financial advising firm out of St. Paul, addressed the board about the benefits of refinancing its debt.
Board chairman Barry Bergem said the board, at this point, is going to take time to review the potential benefits of the refinancing plan before taking any further action.
“It’s worth taking a look at,” Bergem said.
If the board did find it advantageous to go ahead with the refinancing plan, the target date for the start of action would begin in January, Bergem said.
All money saved through the refinancing would not go back into the district’s general fund. Instead, it would alleviate the amount paid to the district by tax payers.
Land looked at for district use
The board re-opened discussions regarding the possible purchase of land adjacent to the school.
The board has targeted the land as the potential site of softball fields or other recreational or sporting purposes.
The land will become available for purchase in the near future.
The board will continue to discuss the matter.
Strategic plan committee created
A decision was made by the board to create six committees to monitor the district’s progress in relation to its strategic plan, recently reviewed by Superintendent Chuck Cheney.
“They’re meeting now between end of the year to review the progress of each committee and report to board on that,” Cheney said.
