2009 Otter football review

Published 09:44 a.m., November 23, 2009

Several Fergus Falls football players took home team awards over the weekend at the Otters annual banquet.

Versatile running back Lars Ronnevik was named the team MVP while linebacker Tyler Garding earned the Defensive Players of the Year Award and Jesse Laugen the Offensive Player of the Year Award.

Ronnevik — who attained all-conference status in the Central Lakes — averaged more than six yards per carry this season, scoring five touchdowns and netting the team’s longest run from scrimmage of 69 yards.

Honorable mention all-conference performer Garding tallied 44 unassisted tackles, 20 more than the next highest total on the team.

Jesse Laugen anchored the offensive line that helped the Otters gain more than 1,000 yards on the ground. He was also named all-conference.

Three times during the season, an individual from the Otters football team was named Player of the Week in the competitive Central Lakes Conference.

On defense, Garding took home honors for his 17-tackle performance against Willmar in Week 2.

Receiver Will Rader won the award in Week 5 when he caught seven passes for 101 yards against Bemidji. Sophomore quarterback Zach Rengel earned the recognition against Alexandria in the final game of the regular season, completing 11 passes for 97 yards and one touchdown.

For the second consecutive year, an offensive lineman from the Otters will play at the NCAA Division I level next season as 6-foot-5, 290-pound Adam Schueller verbally committed to North Dakota State.

Schueller, of course, missed almost the entire season with a severe ankle injury. He plans on officially signing with the Bison in early February.

The Otters ended the season 0-9, bowing out in the first round in the playoffs to high-powered Sartell, which will play in the Class 4A state championship.

Despite the record, Fergus displayed a competitive spirit, losing a number of close games that went down to the wire. Three of the Otters’ first four losses were by 10 or fewer points.

Fergus was also decimated by injures. Aside from Schueller, the Otters also lost talented receiver Nick Risbrudt. Starting defensive lineman and fullback Colton Thorson also missed time.
