A day of donations
Published 01:46 p.m., November 25, 2009
Minnesotans donated $14 million to nonprofit organizations in the state last week.
As part of GiveMN’s Give To The Max Day on Tuesday, Nov. 17, all donations made on the Web site www.givemn.org were matched with a portion of $500,000 from the Bush Foundation, the Minneapolis Foundation and the St. Paul Foundation.
In Otter Tail County, the big receivers of donations were Hillcrest Lutheran Academy at $20,455, A Center for the Arts at $5,190, The Otter Tail County Historical Society at $2,770 and The Kaddatz Gallery at $2,710.
Hillcrest Principal Steve Brue was appreciative of those who donated to the school. They received donations from nearly 50 contributors, Brue said.
“Thanks to all donors who participated,” he said.
The donations made Tuesday help strengthen the nonprofit organizations in the community, said Rebecca Petersen, director of A Center for the Arts. She added that the Web site allowed people to donate to many different organizations and spread the wealth.
Petersen noted that many organizations saw a peak in donations that day.
At A Center for the Arts, they received donations from a few new donors and many regular donors, Petersen said. For some, it was part of their annual donations to the center, she said, pointing out that the center depends on the donations to meet its budget goals.
Petersen lauded the GiveMN Web site as a great way for people to continue to give every day. Some who donated saw that they could donate to several different organizations on the same Web site and spread the wealth around, she added.
Donations to the Kaddatz Gallery exceeded Manager Gretchen Boyum’s expectations. The donations are a good start to the gallery’s annual fundraising campaign goal of $10,000, Boyum said.
She added that they received donations from people that haven’t donated to the gallery previously.
Even if there wasn’t a match, the day encouraged many people to give, which makes a huge difference, she said.

It is too bad our donation money is all being stolen from us for the ice arena. We would have prefered to continue as in the past spreading our dollars to worthy causes in our community. The city council has forced all thoses dollars redirected into an ice arena we will never see and few will use. So far we have turned away 11 kids asking for money or food. Thanks alot city council. I still say I smell kickbacks somewhere.

Come on, be a little honest. You haven't paid a penny to the new ice arena yet. Turns out you're just cheap.
