Hats off for getting rink open

Published 03:20 p.m., November 25, 2009

You have to tip your hat – or your hockey stick – to local residents for getting the Channing Avenue rink open this winter, and for expanding open public skating hours for the Fergus Falls Community Indoor Ice Arena.

Thanks to neighbors in the Channing Avenue area led by Matt Danner, a fundraising campaign to purchase a timer for lights has allowed the rink to be open without the necessity for city staff hours.

In addition, no question the recent debate over the proposed new ice arena prompted the idea of expanding the open skating hours at the current arena.

The fact is, if local hockey and figure skating association leaders want to build public sentiment for the new arena, making skating facilities accessible to all definitely is a good idea. And clearly, the cost to do so is relatively small.

That said, it is important that those who have complained about the lack of access to skating facilities need to take advantage of the new opportunities. After all, one primary reason why the city stopped opening outdoor rinks and indoor skating time was because not enough residents were using the facilities.

Ya but it wasn't Bill who came up with the "star" system like day school where you get a sticker if you go to the potty the right way.and the guy protects Mr. Lincoln like there was some sort of relationship there. And like teenagers everywhere he goes off on a tantrum every few days.

I should start a website. You would have to be rude, crude which should bring out some interesting subjects. Depending on how rude and crude you are, instead of a star you'll get the bird.

I think I know some furry critters, foxy babes, smart alecks and real adults you could count on to make insightful comments and never ask what your favorite color is.

HELLO! Is that a good enough reason for not building a multi-million dollar Ice Palace???

Its not needed and there are not enough people who are interested in skating in order to justify this expensive unnecessary project.

People in Fergus Falls and in the Fergus Falls School District need to wake up stop this spending fiasco.

Last night I saw a news clip which showed the new Crookston ice arena. It cost over $10 million and it looks like a piece of Crap from the 70's both inside and out! How are we going to spend only $8 million and get anything Close to a piece of crap like that?

Lets stick with the indoor arena we Already have and not spend any more money for something which will be an eyesore added onto our high school.
