Bowlers having a ball with new high school team

Published 12:00 p.m., October 1, 2009

Local student bowlers now have a place to shine.

For the first year, high school bowlers are suiting up as members of the Fergus Falls High School Bowling Team.

Those who made the team are no stranger to the game. Many have come up through Northern Aire Lane’s junior bowling leagues and have been involved with the sport for years.

The new Fergus Falls team is part of the West Central North Conference, and runs under the Minnesota High School Bowling League.

“It’s just a more competitive level for them,” said Northern Aire Lanes Manager Luke Loeffler.

Though those who made the team are avid bowlers, coach Thomas Prischmann said it’s been a pleasure watching them grow as a team.

“The highlight is watching the kids get better at bowling,” he said. “It’s a psychological game and they’re learning a lot of the physical moves that you have to make in order to get the pins.”

League play also allows them to move around and face different levels of competition in new settings, which is rewarding for a group of bowlers who grew up bowling against one another.

Players are also able to represent their hometown and school, which is something they haven’t had the privilege of doing in the past.

With seven teams in the conference, league play can take them anywhere within a 75 mile radius. Generally players spend three days practicing and take off for tournaments on the weekends.

At the end of the season, the team takes part in a conference tournament, which determines that teams that qualify to go on to compete at the state tournament.

This year’s conference tournament will be held at Northern Aire Lanes in Fergus Falls at 1 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 1. The tournament will determine what teams qualify for the state tournament. The public is invited to attend.
