Maplewood CROP Walk set for Sunday
Published 12:36 p.m., October 2, 2009
Pelican Rapids will host its 25th annual Crop walk Sunday, Oct. 4, at 2 p.m. at Maplewood State Park east of Pelican Rapids.
In addition to the standard 6.2-mile walk through the wooded hills of the park, a new 3.1-mile option is offered this year. The shorter option follows a paved road from the swimming beach area to the park entrance station and will be a welcome addition for some of the older walkers and those pushing strollers.
As in past years, walkers collect pledges to raise money for local hunger-fighting agencies and international relief and development efforts.
Area churches and the high school’s National Honor Society are working together to coordinate volunteers. Anyone interested in walking can obtain a pledge envelope by contacting their church coordinator or NHS advisor or by calling committee member Julie Tunheim at 218-863-5278.
Pledge envelopes will be collected at the registration table on Sunday at Maplewood State Park. Envelopes can also be returned to church/NHS coordinators prior to the walk or to Trinity Lutheran Church after the event.
Lake Region Electric Cooperative is assisting with day passes for those who don’t have annual state park passes. The first 20 vehicles through the park gate will receive free admittance. Walkers are encouraged to carpool.
The Rotary Club will provide water at the halfway mark of the 6.2-mile walk and several Norwegian Grove 4-H Club members and their families have volunteered to serve the water. In addition, the Lions Club will serve hot dogs at the registration booth near the swimming beach.
The Pelican Rapids CROP Walk is the oldest continuous CROP Walk in the state of Minnesota and generally raises between $3,000 and $4,000 each year, one-fourth of which is designated to a local agency. The local food shelf will again receive the local funds.
Door prizes will be awarded to CROP Walk participants and volunteers following the walk.
