Aaberg opens college career at 'Late Show'

Published 03:58 p.m., October 17, 2009

FARGO, ND. — Rothsay High School graduate Jordan Aaberg performed well in front of a packed house at Bison Sports Arena on Friday night as part of North Dakota State’s “Late Show.”

In the eight-minute scrimmage, which was open to the public as part of the season-opening celebration for the men’s basketball team, Aaberg registered a pair of clean blocks and scored two points.

NDSU head coach Saul Phillips emceed the event and pronounced that “you will see Jordan make a number of blocks in this building, I promise.”

After Aaberg’s second swat, where the 6-foot-9 freshman emphatically turned away a shot, Phillips said: “Anyone here from Rothsay remembers plays like that.”

Aaberg, who was clearly the tallest player on the team, appeared several pounds heavier than his high school playing days. According to his mother, Aaberg gained 20 pounds of muscle in the off-season and will not be red-shirting as once speculated at the beginning of the summer.

The three-hour event had a party-like atmosphere, featuring slam-dunk and 3-point contests as well as a couple dance routines by both the mens and womens teams.

After a pair of exhibition games against MSU-Moorhead (Nov. 4) and Concordia-Moorhead (Nov. 7), the Bison open the regular season Nov. 13 at Utah Valley State.
