What is this?
A new barber in town
Published 03:28 p.m., October 19, 2009
Uptown Barber Shop is making room for another chair and set of scissors.
Ryan Oliver worked as a plumber in Parkers Prairie for a number of years before he decided it wasn’t the right fit.
From there, he and his wife, Julie, began to take classes at Moler Barber College in Fargo. That’s where he met Lloyd Schuur, owner of Uptown Barber Shop in Fergus Falls.
“It’s hard to find a master,” said Oliver, who considers himself lucky to have been given the opportunity to practice the trade under Schuur.
Because barbers tend to remain in one location for years, sometimes the duration of their careers, it’s not everyday a barber is willing to take on a young apprentice, Oliver said.
Schuur had initially made the first move, taking the time to visit Moler Barber College in search of a new apprentice.
As it happened, Schuur and Oliver hit it off.
The social aspect of life as a barber is something that drew Oliver into the career. As a plumber, he was able to interact with new people everyday, as well, but, as a barber, he’s able to do that on a different level.
“The difference between being a barber and plumbing is that you don’t have to hand them a $300 bill at the end of the visit,” Oliver joked.
It’s that sort of attitude that has Oliver fitting into the barber shop scene, which has an atmosphere of humor and relaxation.
With two elementary aged children, Adam and Melissa, Oliver and his wife are looking to settle down in the Fergus Falls community.
“I don’t want to have to move the kids from school to school,” he said.
For the time being, Julie is working as a barber out of Fargo.
With both parents starting out in the business, Oliver says the kids have gotten used to playing customer.
“We practice on the kids,” said Oliver, who went on to say that Adam in particular has become quite used to being asked to sit down for a hair cut.
Having only been here for a few weeks, Oliver says he already likes what he sees.

oh my gosh......I recently met Ryan and Julie! They are two of the nicest people ever! If I was a man, I would definetly have them do my hair, but I'm not. Shucks.

What is this?? A young family moving to Fergus Falls?? I was under the assumption from reading the blogs that young families didn't come to Fergus and the ones that were here are moving away because of the lack of a hockey arena? This family must be a rebel. (Sarcasm intended)
Congratulations and welcome to Fergus. If I had hair, I would come and see you....
