Volleyball roundup: Chargers race past Arrows

BRANDON— Tuesday night’s Little Eight Conference tangle between the Brandon-Evansville and Ashby showcased two teams on opposite ends of the Conference standings.
The Little Eight-leading Chargers used a well-timed blocking game, as well as high-powered offensive attack to cap the Arrows’ long 3-17-2 regular season, 3-0 (15-25, 15-25, 14-25).
“The left and right hitters took the pressure off us in the middle tonight by putting the ball down quickly for points,” Chargers’ coach Gary Ekdahl said.
The Arrows raced out to an early first set 5-0 lead, but could not continue with what would have been an upset and certainly the most exciting Ashby victory of the 2009 season.
“The girls battled tonight and I’m proud of their effort and continued improvement,” Arrows’ coach Brenda Johnson said.
Ashby’s senior captain Amanda Johnson finished the match with a team-high seven kills, as well as added 11 digs.
The back row duo of Haley Ness and Mariah Nelson combined for 37 digs.
Mackenzie Schmuch tacked on six kills.
The Arrows will learn their playoff seeding fate tomorrow morning.
“We need to get well and be ready for tournament time,” Johnson said. “This team could surprise anybody.”
Ashby concludes it’s regular season on a seven match losing streak.
The Chargers finish the season with a share of the Little Eight Conference title win Parkers Prairie.
Parkers Prairie 3, Underwood 0
PARKERS PRAIRIE— The Rockets dropped a Little Eight Conference matchup with the Panthers on Thursday night (22-25, 14-25, 20-25).
Aann Bjorklund handled the duties in front of the net for the Rockets with a team-best 14 kills and three aces.
The Rockets’ Hannah Rocholl led the way with 26 set-assists and 17 digs.
Sam Huseth and Alex Floersch each added nine digs.
“We played real well at times tonight,” Rockets’ coach Diane Ross said. “Our blocking game improved, but we made some crucial errors that we couldn’t afford.”
Underwood closes out it’s season with a 14-9-1 record, 6-4 in conference play, winners of 7 of it’s last 10 matches.
Playoff seeding will be announced tomorrow morning.
With the win the Panthers grabbed a share of the Little Eight Conference title with Brandon Evansville.
