Thysell melds outdoors, teaching

When Tia Thysell first began student teaching at the Prairie Wetlands Learning Center as a student at the University of Minnesota - Morris, she knew she had found what she was looking for.
“I knew it was my niche,” she said. “I love being able to share nature with children. It’s amazing.”
After graduation, Thysell moved to Colorado, where she taught third grade. Shortly after making the move back to her hometown of Pelican Rapids, a naturalist position opened with the PWLC.
That position, which Thysell held for two years, was funded through a grant, allowing her to work as PWLC coordinator for one half of each of the two years.
Once again, Thysell was able to get back to the place that first stole her heart.
When the full time teaching position at the PWLC opened up six months after her naturalist position ended, Thysell saw an opportunity to fulfill the dream she had as a student teacher.
Now officially on the Independent School District 544 roster, Thysell has found comfort settling down in her role.
The inclusion of the outdoor classroom fits well with Thysell, who has a passion to see students connect with nature.
“It impacts the way they learn,” she said.
Throughout the day, Thysell sees roughly 60 students. Observing their style of learning and behavior change is something that’s absolutely priceless for Thysell.
“My favorite part is taking them out into the field, incorporating that into their learning,” she said.
After all, even when she’s not teaching, she’s out enjoying nature herself — and learning every step of the way.
