Driver in fatal accident faces criminal charges

Published 04:09 p.m., October 29, 2009

A Detroit Lakes man has been charged with criminal vehicular homicide for the death of an Otter Tail County driver.

Authorities say Johnathon Allon Bowerman, 37, had methamphetamine and marijuana in his body when he crossed his conversion van over the center line of County Highway 35 near Vergas March 10.

According to a criminal complaint, Bowerman’s van struck a pickup truck driven by William Day, 60, of Vergas, sending the truck into a ditch and on to its passenger side. Day was pronounced dead upon his arrival at St. Mary’s Innovis Health in Detroit Lakes.

Bowerman and three female passengers were injured in the accident, according to the complaint. When questioned in the days following the incident, Bowerman said he did not recall being in an accident or even driving that day — possibly as a result of a head injury, according to the complaint.

Bowerman is charged with criminal vehicular homicide, third degree DWI and reckless driving. He is not being held in jail.

A hearing is set for Nov. 9.
