Game glance: (3) Hillcrest at (2) Bertha-Hewitt
Published 04:43 p.m., October 29, 2009
(3) Hillcrest at (2) Bertha-Hewitt, 7 p.m., Bertha
Trends and numbers: The Comets (7-2) lost 22-18 in Week 2 to the Bears (8-1). In the game, Hillcrest pulled within four when Jared Schultz returned a punt for a touchdown with roughly five minutes remaining in the fourth quarter. The Comets got the ball back, but lost a fumble in the final minute...Hillcrest ran for 286 yards against Onamia in the opening round of the playoffs...Hillcrest has averaged 50 points-per-game in its last four contests...Bertha-Hewitt survived a first-round scare, defeating seventh-seeded Eagle Valley 22-8...The Bears’ only loss came to fourth-ranked Verndale, 32-8 where they surrendered three unanswered touchdowns in the second half...Bertha-Hewitt averaged 35 points-per-game while the defense surrendered eight or fewer points five times this season...The Bears are 4-1 at home...On Sept. 23, Bertha was ranked No. 9 in 9-Man before losing.
Prediction: Hillcrest has improved mightily since Week 2 and is arguably the most talented non-ranked team in 9-Man. Bertha-Hewitt was blown out by unbeaten Verndale, while the Comets nearly beat the Pirates. Hillcrest should win the game, but it will be close.
What’s next: Winner plays either top-seeded Verndale or fourth-seeded Isle in the FargoDome Nov. 6 at noon.
