Rothsay schools still seeks candidate
Published 01:59 p.m., October 31, 2009
School board elections in Rothsay this fall aren’t causing much stress for candidates.
With three open positions and just two days before the election, only two have filed to run for the board.
Jim Boyce and Dave Zimmerman, both current members of the board, have filed for re-election. Doug Danielson, who has held a seat on the board for the past 15 years, has decided to step down from his post without a fight.
“After so many years, I felt maybe I’d served my time,” Danielson said.
The fact that no one has filed for Danielson’s seat doesn’t surprise him. Over the course of the past decade, there haven’t been any real controversies between the board and the community, he said.
“When things are going pretty smoothly, then everyone just sits back,” he said. “When you get a controversy or you’ve got problems, then some people come forward who have some ideas.”
With one open seat, the person with the most write-in votes will likely take the third spot on the board.
If voters choose to write-in the man they’re used to seeing on the board, Danielson may have a tough choice to make.
“We’ll make that decision when the time comes,” Danielson said.
Boyce, who has also served on the board for the past 15 years, said the last ten years have been virtually free of divisive issues.
“People are happy with the way things have gone, in general,” Boyce said. “Typically you get people filing for school board when there’s an issue.”
But just because Rothsay hasn’t been a hotbed of controversy, it doesn’t mean the board isn’t getting the job done, according to Boyce.
The district has recently started a new online school and the move has been made to break the athletic partnership with Barnesville, he said.
Those are reasons Boyce wants to continue to serve on the board. Dealing with declining enrollment and revenue issues from the state are other factors keeping him in the game.
“There are just some things I want to move forward and complete,” he said.
The election is set to take place Nov. 2.
