Volleyball: Rockets soar to third round; Vikings lose
Published 06:43 p.m., October 31, 2009
NORCROSS— Despite the cool weather outside, the Underwood volleyball team is starting to heat up at exactly the right time.
Winners of nine of their last thirteen matches, the Rockets took apart Chokio-Alberta/Herman-Norcross 3-0 (25-22, 25-22, 25-16) in second round action of the Section 6-1A playoffs Friday night.
Rockets’ senior middle hitter Aann Bjorklund entered the match needing 26 kills to reach the 1,000 career milestone, and that’s exactly what she got, Bjorklund reaching the mark on a attack for the 23rd point in the third set.
“I was so proud of her for meeting the challenge with such determination and energy,” Rockets’ coach Diane Ross said. “26 kills in three sets is pretty amazing, and the team rallied around her.”
Hannah Rochell also had an impressive night for the Rockets, registering 44 set-assists, 10 digs, and a perfect 13 of 13 night at the service line.
Alex Floersch had a Rockets’ team best 19 digs.
The win advances Underwood (16-10-1) to a third round playoff matchup with Little Eight Conference counterpart Parkers Prairie (22-6-2) Tuesday in Morris at 6 p.m.
The Rockets are 0-2 against the Panthers this season, dropping their last meeting on October 22 3-0, and the first 3-2 back on September 24.

WADENA — After upsetting Fergus Falls in the opening round of the Section 8-2A tournament Thursday, the fifth-seeded Vikings ran in top-seeded Wadena-Deer Creek and simply couldn’t hold up, losing 25-10, 25-23 and 25-14.
“We just couldn’t get into any offensive rhythm all night,” Pelican Rapids coach Chris Coleman said. “We were playing defense the whole time..”
Kendra Coleman led the way for the Vikings (10-9-1) with six kills and six blocks while Shauna Mullikin added three kills.
After starting the season 4-5, the Vikings went on to win five of their final eight games, including the playoffs.
