Family has long tradition at state fair
Published 12:00 p.m., September 1, 2009
The foot long hot dog stand at the intersection of Carnes and Nelson Streets at the Minnesota State Fair advertises a “60-year-tradition.” That tradition refers to the late Muggs Townsend of Fergus Falls and current family members.
“Today is a good day for us. Many people are stopping to purchase foot long hot dogs,” said Nancy Hansen on Saturday at the Great Minnesota Get-Together in St. Paul.
Muggs, her late father, started selling food at state fairs in the 1940s. Nancy and her husband, Doug, owners of Hansen’s Amusement Foods, have worked as traveling vendors for 33 years. The Minnesota State Fair is one of their favorite places to work.
“We meet many nice people here, and it’s fun to visit with Fergus people who stop here,” said Nancy.
While Nancy grew up with the food concession business, Doug grew up on a farm near Barnesville. He met Nancy at what’s now M State - Fergus Falls, back in the early 1970s.
“We enjoy working with the people on our staff who do a great job,” said Nancy. “They work hard and love the variety of places to see.”
In recent years Hansen’s Amusement Foods has operated nine food stands, covering as many events in Minnesota as possible. Corn dogs and foot longs are the best sellers, followed by cheese curds. They’ve employed an average of 30 people in a given week.
“We continue to work hard at providing good food wherever people gather to have a good time,” said Doug. “That’s why we chose to name our business Hansen’s Amusement Foods.”
