Work at intersection to begin Tuesday

Published 02:24 p.m., September 4, 2009

A signal project at an intersection notorious for accidents is scheduled to begin next week.

The project will include the installation of a signal system at the intersection of State Highway 210 and Redwood Lane. A right turn lane from westbound Highway 210 to Redwood Lane is also planned.

Drivers can expect to encounter lane closures when milling and paving begin Tuesday, according to the Minnesota Department of Transportation (Mn/DOT), which is spending $324,000 in federal stimulus dollars on the work.

Another leg of the project is a new entrance into Mabel Murphy’s. Co-owner Don McQuisten said the entrance will be moved 50 feet closer to Interstate 94. Mabel Murphy’s will remain open during the road work.

Wal-mart paid for the acquisition of easements for the new road into Mabel Murphy’s, covering the cost for the city, said City Engineer Dan Edwards. Wal-mart was scheduled to pay for additional city costs prior to the availability of federal stimulus dollars.

Mn/DOT says the resurfacing part of the project is scheduled to be complete by mid-October, with the signal system up and running by late fall.

The Highway 210/Redwood Lane intersection has been the site of three fatal accidents in the past 19 years, according to Tom Swenson, traffic engineer with Mn/DOT’s District 4 office in Detroit Lakes. The most recent fatality occurred in 2006, roughly a year before officials created a four-way stop at the intersection.

There are one or two accidents at the intersection annually, a relatively low number, Swenson said.

“But those fatalities concern me and I’m sure they concern others as well,” he said.

The need for signals at the intersection has been on Mn/DOT’s radar for several years, he said.
