Author to sign book with Battle Lake setting
Published 07:37 a.m., September 18, 2009
Readers of Jess Lourey’s newest novel “September Fair” may recognize the setting for the book.
In “September Fair,” Battle Lake native Ashley Pederson is murdered at the Minnesota State Fair while having her head carved out of butter after being crowned Milkfed Mary, Queen of the Dairy. While covering the pageant and the murder, Battle Lake Recall reporter Mira James uncovers a deadly State Fair secret.
Lourey is scheduled to sign autographs from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19 at the Victor Lundeen Company in Fergus Falls.
Other books in the series include “May Day,” “June Bug,” “Knee High by the Fourth of July,” and “August Moon.”
Lourey completed the book “May Day” while living in Battle Lake, the residents of which have given her positive feedback about the series, she said.
“I was impressed with the warmth and humor of the people in the town and the beauty and variety of the landscape, but also disturbed by the number of unusual deaths and quirky characters. In other words, it was the perfect place to stage a long-term mystery series,” Lourey said.
Lourey teaches writing and sociology at the college level. She is a member of Sisters in Crime, The Loft and Lake Superior Writers. She also serves on the national board of the Mystery Writers of America.
