Local drums beat for the world

Published 08:44 a.m., September 21, 2009

A group of local men and women gathered Friday evening in Clitherall to kick off a drum circle in the name of global unity.

The 10 Billion Beat drum movement is designed to allow drummers in each time zone around the world to drum for one hour, creating a 24-hour beat heard throughout the planet.

The idea behind the movement is to promote peace and unity through a common experience and positive intentions.

“It’s important for us individually to take time to be in the moment and present,” said Bev Adank, who was prompted to join the circle Friday evening because of concerns regarding the current state of the planet.

Adank, along with other women in the area, regularly gather together for drum circles. When the girls heard of the global movement, they knew it was something they could get behind.

“Our intention is to heal the earth and bring goodwill on humankind,” said Doris Issendorf, who regularly hosts the womens drumming circles.

Diane Mooney, who considers herself new to the drumming scene, said the practice allows her to be free of life’s frustrations and distractions.

“You can’t come and drum and be mad,” said Diane Mooney.

Not all who gathered Friday evening had drumming connections. As people wondered into the Sportsman’s shelter, introductions were made and a circle was formed.

“It’s people from all over,” Mooney said. “Some are meeting for the first time tonight.”

The 10 Billion Beats movement began in Kansas, representing the same time zone as those who gathered in Clitherall. In a sense, the local group was part of the global drumming kick-off.

From here, drummers from around the world picked up the beat, completing the drumming chain.

I don't understand why people are so critical of others who are only trying to bring positive change to our planet. If you don't agree, look the other way. Your tax dollars are not supporting this cause, so just relax.

lol
I find it humorous how persons post here about how pointless this worldwide and completely harmless event was, as if posting here is somehow less pointless.

While I don't care for the analogy, Redcloud, I tend to agree with your sentiment. MARK that on the calendar!

The Fergus Falls Daily Journal, as hosts, expect guests will show respect for each other. The negative comments above are very pointless to read. I see that as just plain jealousy that they couldn't attend themself to experience this event. I attended and it was the most amazing experience I have ever had. I haven't been able to stop thinking about it. Thank YOU Trisha Marczak from the Daily Journal for coming out and writing a nice article. I hope you can come out next year for Ten Billion Beats.
Ohh... and google "ten billion beats" to learn more about it. ;)

I was also at the 10 billion beat drumming 9/18 for peace. The statements I read above simply remind me why we keep drumming. Peace begins with each person...there is no other way.
In peace,
Karen Weego
