Doctor brings passion for care to cancer center

Published 06:00 a.m., September 27, 2009

Dr. Thomas Hegarty has a passion to provide those who have cancer with the treatment they need.

After over 25 years in the medical field, Hegarty, a certified Radiation Oncologist, is joining the team at Lake Region Healthcare, where he’ll contribute in the way of radiation.

Hegarty earned his Doctor of Medicine at Loma Linda University, before moving to Salt Lake City, UT. to take on an Internal Medicine Internship and Radiation Oncology residency at the University of Utah Health Sciences Center.

Since then, he’s worked to bring radiation services to people in rural parts of the country, including northwest Ohio, northern California and, most recently, Worthington, Minn.

Hegarty has always known he was to be a doctor. In fact, his mother was the one who really believed it was to be his path, he said. But it wasn’t until his time in med school when he knew cancer treatment was to be his main focus.

In his latest position, Hegarty worked with the Southwest Minnesota Radiation Center, providing care to those living in and around the Worthington-area.

Hegarty comes to Lake Region Healthcare in the lead up to the new Cancer Care and Treatment Center, scheduled to open January 2010. For the time being, Hegarty spends each week in Fergus Falls and retreats on weekends to spend time with his family, still currently living in Worthington.

His impression of northwestern Minnesota has confirmed Hegarty’s affinity for out state communities that are able to meet commercial needs of its residents — and provide a beautiful setting to live.

“The community is the essence of what Minnesota has to offer,” Hegarty said.
