Geocaching attracts visitors to area

Published 12:00 p.m., September 28, 2009

Pirates were treasure hunting in Fergus Falls Saturday.

“It’s the treasure, it’s the hunt” that hooks people on geocaching, Melinda Doubek said.

The Doubek family was among the 100 people who participated in the pirate-themed GeoFest Midwest, where participants spent Saturday searching for 27 different caches.

Geocaching gets their family out to places they haven’t visited before, Melinda’s husband Michael Doubek said.

The Doubeks drove about 90 minutes from their home in Grey Eagle, Minn., to participate in the event. They were excited it was close to home because most geocaching events are in the metro area, Melinda said.

The Doubeks began geocaching in 2007 after Michael’s coworker told them about it. They looked it up at geocaching.com and found they had a cache a quarter-mile from their house, Melinda explained. They went out to find it and ended up searching for six more that day.

Geocaching is a perfect thing to get a family outdoors, Melinda said.

It’s also an opportunity for families to spend the day together exploring the area, said Jean Bowman, of the Fergus Falls Convention and Visitors Bureau.

During geocaching, participants plug coordinates into their GPS and each coordinate has a clue. Through the process, the participants figured out a pirate name, weapon and location, similar to the game of Clue, Bowman said. A winner and a “lucky guess winner” were awarded at the end of the event. In addition, the first to find each cache won awards donated by Fergus Falls businesses, Bowman said.
