Congratulations, Triple A winners

Published 07:34 a.m., February 5, 2010

Congratulations to seniors Stephanie Miller and Eben Danielson, winners of this year’s AAA (Academics, Arts and Athletics) competition at Fergus Falls High School. They advanced to compete against other seniors from the 15 schools in Section 8AA, and Eben placed second in the region. The Section 8AA winners will be honored at a banquet at Cragun's Resort in Brainerd in March, and the top section winners will advance to state competition.

Each student had to write four essays and have a faculty member write about them, as well. Steph, the daughter of Wayne and Adrianne Miller, participates in band, choir, visual arts, soccer and hockey. Eben, the son of Lee and Kirsten Danielson, participates in band, choir, orchestra, swimming and tennis. Both are in the top 5 percent of their class.

Poetry Out Loud

The high school had the finals of its annual Poetry Out Loud competition on Jan. 29. Ms. Roder’s and Ms. Prischmann’s English classrooms each selected the top three contestants, and the final six recited two poems to a panel of judges and their classmates.

Finalists and the poems they recited were: Andrew Eerdmans — Invictus by William Ernest Henley and Eagle Rain by Robert Francis; Megan Fritz — A Boat Beneath A Sunny Sky by Lewis Carol and Hope is the Thing with Feathers by Emily Dickinson; William Eerdmans — She Walks in Beauty by Lord Byron and Song of the Powers by David Mason; Emily Hexum —The Great Blue Heron by Carolyn Kizer and Safe in their Alabaster Chambers by Emily Dickinson; Ben Haugmo — Beat! Beat! Drums! by Walt Whitman and Blind Curse by Simon Joseph Ortiz; and Brooke Wallington — Ikebana by Cathy Song and On Inhabiting an Orange by Josephine Miles.

Congratulations to all six finalists. Winners William Eerdmans (first place) and Andrew Eerdmans (second place) and alternate Megan Fritz will move on to the next level of competition.

Thank you to Ms. Roder and Ms. Prischmann for their efforts and enthusiasm in reciting poetry out loud for all to hear and enjoy! To view the video clips, go to www.544supt.posterous.com.
