Wrestling: Fergus clips Perham
Published 12:48 a.m., February 5, 2010
Every point counted as the Fergus Falls wrestling team upended Perham 32-31 Thursday night in a well-contested non-conference bout.
Both teams won seven matches and registered three pins, but it was the Otters who came away with a few more convincing decisions to pull off the narrow victory.
Tyler Giza and Abbot Aho got things started for Fergus with consecutive victories at 103 and 112 pounds to give the Otters a 26-7 advantage.
The Yellowjackets, however, reeled off five straight wins to take the lead. In the run, the ‘Jackets registered three straight pins at 125, 130 and 135 pounds.
The Otters were certainly down, but not out.
Alex Hensch (145 pounds) got Fergus Falls back on track with a pin of Payton Jordahl in 1 minute, 25 seconds, igniting a streak of four straight decisions for the home squad.
Undefeated Colton Thorson’s pin of Ben Brill at 215 pounds was the only victory for Fergus in the final three weight classes, but it turned out to be just enough.
Despite losing 6-4, Harvey McMahon battled Jesse Heim toe-to-toe at 285 pounds to secure the Otters’ victory.
The Otters are in action next at the Anoka Invitational Tournament on Saturday beginning at 11 a.m. Their final home dual will be Feb. 9 against Central Lakes Conference opponent Rocori.
