School district is meeting goals
Published 10:58 a.m., February 9, 2010
Fergus Falls Superintendent Jerry Ness presented school board members Monday with a list of achievements the district has made since the start of the school year.
The list is intended to show how the district is meeting its goals, previously put forth before the beginning of the 2009-10 school year.
Ness touched on the education the district provides, from those attending early childhood development programs to those attending classes through adult basic education.
Since the start of the school year, the Area Learning Center (ALC) has graduated 34 students.
"We're providing a variety of opportunity for students to graduate and get their education," Ness said.
Ness also discussed what the district is doing to run the system in a fiscally responsible manner.
"We've emerged from SOD (Statutory Operating Debt), and we'reĀ making decisions based on good data with our recovery spread sheet," Ness said.
The district has made it a priority to go paperless, which has been an example of cutting costs where possible, Ness said.
The district has included new financial curriculum into classes, especially within Family and Consumer Science courses.
Another aspect of the district's strategic plan is to, not only inform students of the district's motto, but live it out.
Ness has met with elementary students regarding the "where excellence is expected" motto.
Ness cited the eighth grade band's upcoming trip to perform at the Minnesota Music Educators conference as an example of that excellence.
Using data to help drive student achievement is another component of the district's plan.
Efforts are being made within the district, including a new math course added at the ALC, to help students achieve satisfactory scores on mandated state testing, including the MCA-II grad standard tests.
"We have collaborative opportunities for preparing students to make sure they score well on tests," Ness said.
The list of achievements presented Monday included eight pages of related efforts. Ness touched just briefly on some of the highlights.
