Woman fatally shot

A dispute over an automatic handgun turned tragic Friday night with the fatal shooting of a 29-year-old Fergus Falls woman.

Mandy Kemmer was killed during the shooting at the Lakeview Estates mobile home park. The shooting occurred at 1608 County Highway 111, trailer No. 17, where a group of about 10 people had gathered for a small party, said Tim Brennan, chief of public safety for the city of Fergus Falls.

Police received a 911 call at about 10:30 p.m. Friday stating that someone had been shot. Kemmer was deceased upon officers’ arrival.

Police have a suspect in the shooting, but the individual has not been charged, Brennan said this morning.

Police investigators say that the suspect was among people gathered at the trailer and had a handgun in his possession. He was handling the gun carelessly, prompting Kemmer to take the gun away from him, Brennan said. Kemmer took the gun to another room in the trailer. The suspect followed and attempted to retrieve his gun.

“That’s when the gun discharged and struck her in the chest, killing her,” Brennan said.

Because there were no witnesses in the room other than the deceased and the suspect, police have yet to determine who pulled the trigger of the gun. The suspect fled the scene after the shooting, but, when contacted by police, he cooperated with their investigation.

The Fergus Falls Police Department and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension continue to investigate the incident. Several people have been interviewed in connection with the incident, police officials said.

It was the second shooting in the same trailer in the past year. On June 4, 2009, a person in the trailer shot and killed himself. The trailer now has a different owner than a year ago. Kemmer was not the owner of the trailer.
