Darrell Ervin Spanswick, 61, of rural Deer Creek, died Monday, Dec. 4, 2006, at his home.
He was born in Fergus Falls on March 29, 1945, the son of David and Edith (Quam) Spanswick. He grew up in the Battle Lake area where he attended school.
He married Arlene Gunkel on March 5, 1965, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Deer Creek. They made their home in Ottertail for three years and then moved to Deer Creek where Darrell resided with his wife until his death.
Darrell worked for Henning Bottle Gas and then went to work on road construction where he was a road grader operator in the summer and worked at Dorow’s Mink Ranch in Ottertail in the winter months.
On road construction he worked for Donald Conroy Construction and Riley Brothers Construction.
He retired in 2002 to be home and care for his ill wife, Arlene. He was a loving father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend. He loved repairing anything and everything for anyone.
His special thing was his garden. He enjoyed his grandchildren and loved to teach them all about gardening and his special recipe for making plants grow the best.
He also loved ice fishing in his fish house.
He is survived by his children: Barbara Martin of Lake Lillian, Minn., and her children: Nathaniel Martin, Cory Martin and Travis Martin; Shari Spanswick of New York Mills and her children: Jesse Kampsen, Josh Kampsen and Jarad Kampsen; Shelly (Jim) Heinze, of Brooten, Minn., and their children: Mariah Heinze and Justine; David Spanswick of Deer Creek; and his daughter, Jenna Spanswick; and a brother, Richard (Marie) Spanswick of Battle Lake.
Darrell was preceded in death by his wife, Arlene, who died last November; his parents; and a granddaughter, Jassmyn Arlene Spanswick.
Visitation: Thursday from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home and one hour prior to services at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Friday at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Henning
