Johanna Dumke, 89, Fergus Falls, MN
Johanna Dumke, 89, of Fergus Falls, died Monday at Midwest Home Health Care in Fergus Falls.
She was born Aug. 23, 1918, in Elizabeth Township in Otter Tail County to Henry and Hilda (Boen) Van Cleef. She grew up on the family farm in Elizabeth Township.
In 1932, she moved to Fergus Falls to work for the Evan Glende family while attending high school. She graduated from Fergus Falls High School in 1936.
Jo worked at the lunch counter at a local drug store before marrying Henry Melvin Dumke on Jan. 17, 1944. The couple farmed in Orwell Township. Jo began working for F.W. Woolworth’s in 1953. The family moved to Fergus Falls in 1965. She retired after 30 plus years with Woolworth’s.
Jo held various offices with the Eagles Auxiliary and delivered meals on Wheels. She was active in TOPS and Y’s Folk. She also enjoyed making various crafts, playing cards and games with friends and family, fishing at the lake and an occasional visit to the casino.
She was preceded in death by her parents, stepmother, Agnes (Wilde) Van Cleef, her husband of 36 years, Henry Dumke and an infant sister, Mildred.
She is survived by two sons, William (Linda) Dumke of Fergus Falls and Jim (Wendy) Dumke of Mendota Heights; grandchildren, Tessa Vogel of Rothsay, Joshua (Michelle) Dumke of Seattle, Wash., Justin Dumke of Columbus, Ohio, Mandy (John) Danielson of Rothsay; step-granddaughters, Heidi (Scott) Nordin of Grand Forks, N.D., Jill (Mike) Brethorst of Barnesville; great-grandchildren, Brandon, Ryndel and Natalie Vogel, Sydney and Aaron Dumke, Madalyn Birath-Dumke, Samuel and Matthew Danielson, and Katelynn Brethorst; one brother, John Van Cleef of Pelican Rapids; and by her granddog, Mulligan Jo.
Visitation: Wednesday from 5 to 7 P.M. at the Glende-Nilson Funeral Home in Fergus Falls and resuming for one hour prior to service at the church
Service: Thursday at 2 p.m. at Church of Peace United Methodist Church, Fergus Falls
