Alice Nelson

Alice Nelson, 99, of Ashby, died Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, at the Pelican Lake Health Care Center.
She was born March 14, 1908, on the home farm by Ashby, the daughter of John and Martha Lynum. She was baptized and confirmed, in Norwegian, at Pelican Lake Lutheran Church and spoke only Norwegian until she entered school. She attended school through the eighth grade. After her schooling, she did various housekeeping jobs and worked as a cook and housekeeper for the Rosengren family in Fergus Falls.
Alice and Willie F. Nelson were married on Sept. 19, 1931, at her parent’s farm by Ashby. They moved into a new house that her husband had built for them, which was equipped with battery-pack electricity along with running water. After their marriage, they farmed together. In later years Alice was a salesperson for Rawleigh Products.
Willie died July 7, 1965, and Alice continued to live on the farm until June of 1996, when she entered the Pelican Lake Health Care Center in Ashby.
Alice loved math, her favorite times were spent with the grandchildren playing games and teaching them math. Alice liked music, she was a people person who enjoyed visiting, and she enjoyed spending time on the telephone keeping up with the neighbors. Alice enjoyed her children and grandchildren, she was very family orientated.
She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Martha Lynum; and her husband, Willie F. Nelson.
She is survived by her daughter, Edith (Kermit) Johnson of Ashby; four grandchildren, Pamela (Gary) Jaenisch of Fergus Falls, Deanna (Charles) Holte of Ashby, Richard (Mary Ellen) Johnson of Apple Valley, and Daniel (Penny) Johnson of Chanhassen; 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren, LeAnne and Thereasa Jaenisch, Jennifer (Paul) Johnsrud, (Elli and Ethan), Joel Holte, Jacqueline (Jeremy) Anderson (Lukas), Christopher, Melissa, Ashtyn, Bailey and Christian Johnson.
Visitation: Monday from 5 to 7 p.m., with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the service at the church
Service: 11 a.m. Tuesday, at the Peace Lutheran Church, Ashby
