Casper Walvatne

Casper Walvatne, 91, of rural Battle Lake, died Thursday, Jan. 17, 2008, at Broen Memorial Home.

He was born March 19, 1916, in Clermont, Iowa, to Alfred and Clara (Kleppe) Walvatne. He was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran faith and attended rural schools through his elementary years in Iowa and Minnesota.

On Oct. 14, 1940, he married Anna Pederson on the lawn of the Gilbert Pederson farm. After their marriage, they lived one year in Maine Township and then moved to their farm on the west shore of Otter Tail Lake where they together farmed.

Anna died Dec. 21, 1999.

He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Battle Lake. He loved to work in the woods cutting wood and doing woodworking. He grew popcorn and sweet corn and enjoyed fishing on Blanche Lake and playing tri-ominos.

He is survived by his daughters, Joan (Vernon) Simmer of Rothsay, Harriette Walvatne of Battle Lake, Colleen Walvatne of Crystal, and Annette (Ed) Loeffler of Hoffman; sons, Dave (JoAnn) of Crystal, Don (Julie) of Minneapolis, Wayne (Becky) of Battle Lake, Warren (Chris) of Port Townsend, Wash., Paul (Carol) of Robbinsdale, and Brad (Alice) of Battle Lake; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Lydia Ostrom of New Brighton; brothers, Joseph and Ervin both of Minneapolis, Reuben of Battle Lake, Harry, Eugene and Alfred, Jr., all of Wheatridge, Colo.; a sister-in-law, Lorraine Pederson of Fergus Falls; brother-in-law, Jim Carlson of Marine on St. Croix; numerous nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Anna; a daughter, Becky Ann; a brother, Abner; and a sister, Mary Ann Carlson.

Visitation: Monday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home in Battle Lake, and one hour prior to the service at Broen Home

Service: 1 p.m. Tuesday, in the Light and Life Auditorium at Broen Memorial Home, Fergus Falls
