Knute Soland, Jr., 82, Ashby, MN

Knute Soland, Jr., 82, of Ashby, died Tuesday, Sept. 30, 2008, at the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls.

He was born Sept. 27, 1926, in Grant County, the son of Knute, Sr. and Anna (Anderson) Soland. He grew up in Grant County and attended country school. Knute entered the U.S. Army and fought in the Korean War.

On March 21, 1953, he married Geraldine Stokke and they made their home in Grant County where they farmed the family farm.

In January 2007, Knute moved to the Veterans Home in Fergus Falls, making it his home until his death.

He was a member of the Ashby Legion and the VFW in Fergus Falls. He enjoyed playing bingo and cards with staff and friends at the Veterans Home.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Clarence and Albert; and a sister, Clara Moerke.

He is survived by his wife, Geraldine; four children, Paulette (Dennis) Bowman of Fergus Falls, Sonja (Burnell) Herman of Wendell, Knute (Thumper) Soland of Fergus Falls and Jody Soland of Eagan; 10 grandchildren, Brian (Alisha) Bowman, Jennifer (Aaron) Horwitz, Tonya (Trevor) Westrom, Blair (Crystal) Herman and Aaron Herman, Christopher (Darcy) Soland, Derek Soland and Katherine Soland, Melissa Kugler and Jill (Fredy) Kugler; 14 great-grandchildren, Justin, Brody, Evan, Brock, Blake, Bryant, Benton, Brieanna, Ellie, Brandon, Breck, Carly, Mckeana and Jack; a sister, Anne Bue of Wickenburg, Ariz.; a sister-in-law, Gladys Soland; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Visitation: Two hours prior to the service at the funeral home

Service: 1 p.m. Friday, at Glende-Nilson Funeral Home, Fergus Falls
