Co-chair Louie Kamrowski, official judge Anita “Bucky” Bethel and Long Tail winner Tony Rondeau were among the Pheasants Forever members gathered for the second annual Otter Tail County PF Chapter Long Tail Contest. Kamrowski won last year’s contest. Rondeau’s 24 1/8 rooster tail won the 2007 contest. Darin Lindblom received a prize for the shortest tail (6 1/2 inches). John Hansel won the drawing for a PF gift certificate. Co-chair Larry Bethel said the “just for fun” event drew around 20 entries. Bethel’s four-man party bagged eight roosters near Elbow Lake. Brandon Boutiette of Perham shot a 24-pound tom turkey with one-inch spurs this weekend with the help of mentor guide Mike Edwards of Dalton. Also along on the hunt was Brandon’s father, Brad. The 12-year-old was one of 10 boys to be drawn for a youth turkey hunt in Zone 239. Steve Hanson of Detroit Lakes coordinates the program. Big catch - Dorothy Merchant and her husband, Dennis, took their pontoon to the South end of Otter Tail Lake in August to refuel. It was a beautiful sunny Sunday so they had supper before heading home. It was so nice that they decided to fish on the way to their cabin. Dorothy was reading and enjoying the sun when they noticed that the line on her rod was all run out with the rod bent sharply to the side. It took her 30 minutes to finally get the northern back to the pontoon. The net was too small for the big fish and the "Husky Jerk" lure caught at the top of the net. They tried to release the fish but it was impossible to revive. View photo »

The Fergus Falls area is not shy of geese as the December hunting season approaches on Saturday. DNR wildlife manager Don Schultz looks for a good season unless inclement winter weather makes hunting conditions too tough for hunters and birds. The 10-day season will run through Dec. 18. The daily limit on Canada geese will be five with 10 in possession. View photo »
