Weekend

Since the Vikings won this weekend and I am usually knocking them for losing, I suppose I should say something nice since they won the game. Aw, do I have to? Well just a little bit I guess.
Defensively they did a good job again. The defense has done a pretty good job all season and this was no different. Offensively the Vikings did what they needed to do to get the job done but lets face it, without the early fumble and return by Harris and with Jacksonville fumbling the following the kickoff, I’m not sure it would have been the same game. The Vikings did capitalize on those mistakes which they don’t normally do.
That one fumble by the Jaguars was a head scratcher and actually quite humorous. It was the one that the center goofed up on. Now, I have never been a center, but wouldn’t you think the guy could feel a quarterbacks hand on his butt, or not. Obviously he did not as his quarterback was in shot gun position and he hiked it as if he had his hand on his butt, the ball drops and Harris picks it up and runs it in for a touchdown. That play alone should have been an indication of how the day was going to go for the Jags. Sounds like one of my days.
The win and the win by Chicago will make next Sunday’s game and interesting one to watch. By the way, I wonder when the Vikings will lose the Williams brothers for a few games. I thought they were supposed to be suspended. It’s funny that we haven’t heard more about this situation.
-There have already been comments about the Gophers overwhelming loss to Iowa. Nothing should be said more about it. It should be forgotten, erased from our memory banks. Really, I’m serious. Forget it.
-The Timberwolves lost one and then won one on the weekend. On Friday night against the Celtics they looked horrible. On Sunday against the Pistons they looked like a different team. Looks like another roller coaster ride of a season.
By the way, why are the Celtics pronounced “seltics” and not “keltics” like it is over seas. Like, it’s not the “seltic” women who sing it’s the “keltic” women. What’s the difference? Don’t tell me it’s the “same difference” either. If that isn’t one of the stupidest sayings.
-Ok, so what is exactly wrong with Marion Gaborik? They say it is a “lower body” injury which means that with his history, it’s a groin injury. The guy has been “AWOL” for most of the season and my source says he doesn’t skate for very long while he is practicing. My score is my son who I have told you works at Parade Ice Gardens where the Wild practice a lot. He said he hasn’t heard just what is wrong but says the groin injury theory may be right by the way he is skating.
Son Ben also reports that Curtis Foster is skating a lot better than when he had seen him skate a month ago. He says he looks like he is about 60-65% which is amazing considering how bad the injury to his leg was. That was a massive break.
I watched the San Diego - Colts game and mused that it would be nice if the vikes offense could put together drives like those teams obviously can. Accurate passing, what a concept! 3 completions in a row! Plays that have a purpose! Now I'm stretching it.
What's Marion Gaborik's problem? Easy. He's a hockey player.
The Gophers football team, did they play this weekend?
As to the (s)eltic (k)eltic matter, that is a fascinating question, and Tom, the difference is not the same, but rather, different. The word "celtic" can be pronounced with an "s" or a "k" sound, as you point out, and can also be spelled with a "K", although then the alternate "s" pronunciation is not applicable. Generally speaking, the "k" celtic refers to the linguistic, religious, and cultural history, tradition and social institutions of the Kelts, and their continuing influence. You gave a good example of Celtic singers. Another example would be the Celtic neo-paganist movement in Villard and Forada. The "s" celtic generally is used in specific group names, most prominently sports teams. For example: Belfast Celtic - Northern Irish football team, Bloemfontein Celtic
football team, Celtic F.C. - of Glasgow, Scotland (football team), Donegal Celtic - Northern Irish football team, Farsley Celtic A.F.C. - of Farsley (near Leeds), West Yorkshire, England, Lurgan Celtic Football Club - of Lurgan, County Armagh, Northern Ireland, Oban Celtic - a shinty club from Oban, Scotland, Stalybridge Celtic F.C. - of Stalybridge (near Manchester), England Dewsbury Celtic - Rugby League team of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire.
And of course, the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics are an American professional basketball team based in Boston, Massachusetts, playing in the Atlantic Division of the Eastern Conference in the National Basketball Association (NBA). The team is owned by Wycliffe Grousbeck and coached by Doc Rivers, with Danny Ainge as the President of Basketball Operations. Founded in 1946, their 17 NBA Championships are the most for any NBA franchise, while the 1959-to-1966 domination of the NBA Championship, with eight straight titles, is the longest consecutive championship winning streak of any North American professional sports team to date. They currently play their home games in the TD Banknorth Garden. The adoption in 1946 of "Celtics" as the team name is thought to have been an attempt to appeal to the large and increasingly properous post-war Irish communities in the Boston metropolitan area. There is little evidence suggesting why the owner may have selected the "s" pronunciation over the "k" sound, other than its historical "s" sound for sports team names. In any event, we all recall that the first rule of names is that the owner is the sole and final arbiter of its correct pronunciation.
Tom, glad you asked.
Gee thanks TDog for the history lesson. I'm glad I was able to give you something to research so early on a Monday morning. Since the Scottish wear kilts can it be assumed that they can also be wearing "silts"?
Different spelling on Kilts, Tom.
Tdawg's answer sounds like it's straight out of the wikipedia!
Good job on that one... although, I have always been curious myself, of that "Keltic" vs. "Seltic" pronunciation!
Vikes play good "D" and their offense is still atrocious!
It was good to see that Peterson got benched the first two series for being late to a meeting/bus/whatever.
At least he's succeptable to disciplinary action, even though he's the stud of the team.
He manned up and said it was his fault, and that he "agreed" with the decision from the team hierarchy.
They still have a shot to make the playoffs if they run the table and get past Chitown and the Kitties in the next few weeks.
Their mettle will be tested against Atlanta, Phoenix and the Giants.
Any time, Tom. And no, the Laddies is Scottland do not wear silts -- just the lassies, but if plied with enough ale & meade . . . . Great eye, Bigs, it was straight out of Wikopedia, just as you said. No research, just cut & paste.
Watched the Saints-Packers game. That's what offense should look like. I'm still flummoxed as to why the Vikes didn't want Brees for $3.5 mil when he was available. He cut up the Pack like he used to cut up the Gophs & the rest of the Big Ten.
Saw in Monday's paper that the Vikes got 15 first downs on 200 yards total offense. Yeah, the Jags have a good defense, but not that good. Is it bad enough that Childress is contemplating going back to TJack?
