West side signal long overdue

Published Friday, March 2, 2007

We are glad to learn that the city will install traffic signals on Highway 210 where it intersects the roadway that accesses Wal-Mart on one side and the driveway for Mabel Murphy’s restaurant on the other. It is a decision that should significantly enhance safety.

The intersection, on the city’s far west side, has been a problem for years. Many cars turn onto 210 either from Wal-Mart on the north or Mabel’s on the south, while traffic approaching from the west is still traveling at 55 mph or better. Accidents result.

The signal lights should be an improvement for driver safety, as well as ultimately making it easier to access businesses on either side of Highway 210.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Now if they will just put a signal on Hwy 210 by UBC, and one at the intersection by Pine Plaza, that should make driving in the area a lot easier. There have been many accidents near the Pine Plaza intersection, and probably by UBC, too.

There will be a signal installed at Tower Rd/Lincoln Ave in 2009 or 2010 when the new Tower Rd Bridge is constructed.

As for the Pebble Lake Rd/210 intersection, Mn/DOT has studied it, and it doesn't currently meet warrants for a signal (at least a couple of years ago it didn't). That may not be the case today with ACS and ISD544 relocating to that area. I wouldn't be surprised if another signal study isn't already in the works, or maybe planned for the near future (but that's just speculation).

Another area very congested with traffic is the corner of Union and Vernon where there are only three way traffic signs. Have seen some close accidents there.
