What is the difference?

Published Tuesday, August 7, 2007

I just received a call from the office of Congressman Steven King, requesting a $50 donation for the Pro-Life Coalition.

His concept is life begins at conception. This has been debated for years. The court decided in Roe vs. Wade, that women have a choice as to what happens to their bodies.

Let’s not go backwards on women’s rights, do not deny them the right of choice. Would it be better to have the child born and abused or killed by the women that never wanted them.

A lot of younger and older women do not have and do not qualify for any type of insurance and cannot afford or are denied medical availability so they cannot afford to see a doctor or pay for birth control pills.

Even Medicare will pay for Viagra for men, but public assistance for medical and many private insurers still refuse to pay for birth control for women.

What is the difference between aborting life for stem cell research and a woman aborting a life she doesn’t want or care about and the father refuses to acknowledge or support it?

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

I totally agree with Ms. West, I think Public Assistance should pay for birth control pills. While they are at it, they might as well pay for abortions as well. That way, women don't have to have any responsibility or accountability for their actions. It is unbelievable to me that there are any unwanted pregnancies in the 21st century. These "women" need to grow up, be responsibile and stop being so self-centered. By the way Ms. West, I gave my $50 contribution and after reading your letter, I'm planning on making yours too.

I'm confused. You don't want government-sponsored health care to cover contraceptives (which are generally very expensive), but also don't understand how unwanted pregnancies can possibly happen. So, what you're arguing is that those who don't have insurance or can't afford to pay full retail for contraception are somehow irresponsible or self-centered? Let me guess - these women are irresponsible for not remaining chaste until marriage like your God wants?

Well first, Sharon West needs to educate herself before expressing her opinions. It'd be interesting to find out what resources she researched on this topic. She states that medicaid does NOT cover birth control when in fact there are several federal and state medicaid programs that covers birth control. (For women of all ages)

MN has even gone the extra step for those that do not qualify for medical assistance or MNCARE to apply for the Minnesota Family Planning program that is state funded. (for ages 15 - 50)

Sharon is incredibly incorrect and it's rather appalling to see that once again an illerate writer of the subject shares biased opinions without basis.

Most people who believe life begins at conception believe that to reduce the abortion rate would be to continue and increase education and provide the means to prevent pregancies from happening to begin with or support pregnancies when the women chose to give birth.

I agree with aopumpkin when they write how the responsibility of one's own body at this day and age (with exceptions of course) should be decided before they get themselves into a predicament they don't want to be in. Again through education and available programs that support preventing unwanted pregnancies, there really is no excuse for most abortions (again with exceptions) that happen in this day and age.

And where's the possibility of adoption in this picture? To argue that it's too hard for a mother to give their child up for an adoption to live a long, happy, healthy life and that they would rather kill it instead, I think would be insane.

Please don't continue to solicit incorrect information.

I thought most people who believe life begins at conception believe abstinence is the only acceptable form of birth control.
