Outpouring of support for Buruds comforting
Published Thursday, December 20, 2007
How comforting it was to see the outpouring of support to the Burud family during what could conceivably be the worst week of their lives.
The endless donations of memorials, best wishes, shoulders to cry on and services provided by local businesses showed Fergus Falls’ true colors. Especially the Viking Cafe for the donation of the reception food for a large number of people, Target for donating a Christmas tree for Cayden which stands in Applebee’s for anyone to hang an ornament on, and last but certainly not least, the Bigwood event center with their selfless and humble fee of $5-plus tax per person (set after
all plans were finalized and programs had been printed) to host the reception.
Who would have thought you needed to keep your head on a swivel for price gouging when planning your child’s funeral?

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.Posted by CaydensParents (anonymous) on December 20, 2007 at 1:37 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thanks Aaron for your honesty. We want to thank Heather J. Events Coordinetor, Travis T. Kitchen manager at the BEC for all their donated time and effort for us to have the reception there. As parents we want the community to know that having to pay for the place with donated food is not the problem. The problem is how does a business charge $1300.00 for a space for two and a half hours. We had 500 guests at the celebration and only 263 at the reception because our guests found out we had to pay per person, so needless to say we were unable to spend time with our family and friends to celebrate Caydens life. We are not understanding how the BEC did not make a profit off this, they had 6 staff members on at 6.15 an hour, that works out to be 92.28 that we payed for staff. My wonderful employees at Applebees set up the reception hall in the morning. You can't tell me between electricity, garbage removel, paper plates and plastic silverware that adds up to 1200.00. Remember the food was donated by our dearest friends. We don't care to speak with Tom from the BEC, but what comes around goes around.

I've also had several unpleasant experiences dealing with the "management" out at the Z and Bigwood. And I've had to deal with them very few times. It's unfortunate something like this had to happen to you at this time, but has you said, what comes around goes around, and in a small community such as this, people tend to be held accountable for their actions.

Amanda- I am sorry that you had to go through this! They took advantage of your family! They don't see you as a mourning family but as a money making opportunity! It's sad really. Target can donate a tree and they are a "big company" but they also have a heart. I know for one that I will never bring any business to the Z or the Bigwood center. I've never been there but I have never heard anything good about it. Where can we send donations for your family? Again, I am so sorry and have been thinking about your family!

A memorial fund has been set up for Cayden Burud at Bank of the West in Fergus Falls.

How embarrassing for the bigwoods management. Each one of you should be ashamed of yourselves. I'll even bet that they will not address this. I know I will never be there and I am sure gonna tell others about this.

The bigwood has held many other dinners for past funerals, they were also billed. How do you expect a business to stay open if they gave everything away. Everyone is comming down on them, when they were just doing their job. Why not a big THANK YOU to the six staff members for coming in either on their day off or earlier than planned to help this family. Those staff, just like every other employee at every other job should get paid for working. It just angers me how people are being treated in this town.
