Coffee-clutchers solve day’s problems

Published Friday, December 21, 2007

In 1993, Bev and John Aune organized a group of coffee soulmates who gather each morning. After 14 years not a day goes by when fewer than four or five meet, starting at 9 a.m.

“We have lighthearted conversations, talk about our families and tell a lot of jokes,” Bev Aune said. “Most of us want to keep things fun and noncontroversial, so we try to stay away from politics.”

Long-time member Vince Ebbighausen, who comes for coffee three times a week, said the group is comprised of a good group of common people.

“It’s good to have people of various religious faiths represented,” Ebbighausen said. “It’s a fun part of our retirement life, having the opportunity to socialize with some really nice people — as many as a dozen or so on any given day.”

New to the group is Delores Pasik, 79, who moved to Fergus Falls in September 2006 after living in California. She’s close to her daughter, Lyn Johnson, and son-in-law Brian, who also reside in Fergus Falls.

“I’m part of the coffee group because of Bev Aune, and I’m grateful to her,” Pasik said. “When I first came to town Bev got me interested as a volunteer at Pioneer Home, with bingo, tea parties and other activities. Joining the coffee group quickly followed.”

Pasik hosted a Christmas party Monday evening for the coffee group, and it was well attended.

“All of the members of the coffee group have a good time each week,” Iona Saunders said. “We feel like a family when we meet at Barringers.”

June and Harold Duebbert have been members of the coffee group for about five years.

“As a retired nurse, I have a lot in common with former nurses Bev Aune, Dottie Boerhave, Joan Ebbighausen and Ellen Knudsen,” June said. “My husband, Harold, is an avid hunter so has a lot in common with the male members of our coffee group.”

Vern Kester, another member of the group, enjoys the company of fellow retirees and the opportunity to reminisce about what he refers to as “the good old days.” Kester tries to join the group three or four times each week.

“There’s always something new and interesting to talk about, with good coffee and nice people on hand,” Bev Aune said.

The Daily Journal is happy to host community conversations about news and life in Fergus Falls and the surrounding area. As hosts, we expect guests will show respect for each other. That means we don't threaten or defame each other, and we keep conversations free of personal attacks. Witty is great. Abusive is not. If you think a post violates these standards, don't escalate the situation. Instead, flag the comment to alert us. We'll take action if necessary. It's not hard. This should be a place where people want to read and contribute -- a place for spirited exchanges of opinion. So those who persist with racist, defamatory or abusive postings risk losing the privilege to post at all.

Unless "Coffee-Clutchers" is the formal name of the group, someone needs to learn the proper terminology. Correct spelling(s) and definitions.....coffee klatch or coffee klatsch also kaffeeklatsch n. A casual social gathering for coffee and conversation ... Kaffee, coffee + Klatsch, gossip.

Dear eagle-eye,
After moving to Maui 6 years ago, I have really enjoyed reading the Journal on line. It's fun for me to see what's going on "back home". But I get so tired of reading critical comments at the end of each story. It seems that almost every article I read has a negative slam at the end of it. Do you have to do this?
I have learned in life that we do not know others motives so please understand that I'm only looking for an answer, not criticizing you. Please forgive me if I have mistakenly taken your intensions wrong and forgive me if I misspelled a word wrong.

I'd like to personally and negatively slam Mauibill. :~)
Sounds like you got it rough there, Bill.
"Here I am, chillin' in Maui and boy, am I worked up about what's going on at the Journal website."
Perhaps it's time for a luau.
