Charcoal ignites fire in Fergus Falls trailer park
Published Friday, January 18, 2008
A piece of charcoal is thought to be the cause of a mobile home fire at 1142 Green Acres Trail Thursday. No one was injured, Fergus Falls Fire Chief Mark Hovland said.
The Fergus Falls Fire Department was called out around 4:45 p.m. Kealee Whipps, the home’s occupant, 49, was utilizing a small charcoal grill in her kitchen when a piece of charcoal apparently fell to the floor, burning an 8-inch hole through the kitchen floor, Hovland said.
More of the floor had to be cut out around it, as well as a portion of the kitchen wall, to ensure the fire had not spread, Hovland said. Firefighters cleared the scene after an hour and a half. Whipps is staying with family members, Hovland said. The fire is under investigation.

Using a charcoal grill in the house? Unreal! If not a fire, then carbon monoxide would be a possible danger.

Well...it did happen at the trailer park...

While eagle_eye & AndyMosity can afford to sit cozily in their modernly heated homes, some unfortunate folks in FF find themselves heating their homes with charcoal grills. We should be thankful that that piece of coal dropped; Ms. Whipps surely would have died within hours from the carbon monoxide.

I don't see how just because this person lives in a trailer park that we have to judge the situation based on that. I am sure that other people do just as dumb things living in a house.
I myself live in a different trailer park, and i wouldn't want to be "labeled" just because of it. I rent the trailer, have rental insurance and take care of our place....so Just because it isn't a "house" doesn't mean squak!!

You mean “Squat” not “Squak” if you did not rent a trailer you would know that.
Unless you have ducks.

I happen to live in a mobile home, and am not the least bit ashamed of that. It is clean, well kept, and very nice looking inside. I've seen people who live in high dollar homes who live like pigs. You people who have to cast such rude and unfeeling comments are the ones I truly feel sorry for. There is absolutely no excuse for that kind of behavior.

Wow, the Stepfords of Fergus are out again setting such a Christian example of how others should live up to their community standards. Maybe if more of you built up others instead of tearing them down, you would find less time to be such bigotted King Nothings.

Some trailors cost more than some "stick built homes." Way to go for being so judgemental. And you wonder why residents take their hard earned dollars to other towns to spend. Why spend your income on a town that looks down on you for the place you call home. At least some can feel cozy and close to their families in their 800 sq ft home, than the 2000+ sq ft home where you have to walk a mile just to use the bathroom, oh wait, you have 4 bathrooms, I forgot.

Let me tell you a little about a $300,000.00 home I had to help clean after the "tenant" left. (a woman who is a trained professional) There were at least 4 dogs, and an unknown number of cats that co-habitated with the residents who lived there. There were cats living within the walls, and got in there because of the holes that were punched in by the tenants. There was cat feces in the kitchen sink, the bathtub, on the stove, in the cupboards, to name only a few places. There were children living in this house!!! One of the rooms was so bad, that we literally had to take a shovel to it. The damage was unbelievable. And what was the mother's occupation? She was a PHARMACIST!
It doesn't matter WHERE you live, it matters HOW you live. I am so sick of judgemental people who think they are so much better than others! It is very common for people who have many of their own character defects that find it so necessary to put others down in attempt to make themselves look better. What they don't think about, is how transparent their efforts are. They have just lowered themselves even further. Good Job.

I was completely speechless to hear that people are so judgmental about people who live in trailor houses. Green Acres has been known to have bad people in there in the past and who knows, maybe now too, but I can bet that "richy rich" neighborhoods have them too, so all you people that think that nothing but bad people live in a trailor open your eyes and get over yourselves....You are no better. And have you thought that people would rather have a nice home(trailor or not) instead of being in debt so they can say they live in a big $300,000 house that they will have to pay for for the rest of their lives. Once again get over yourself.

JL, what would you say if you weren't speechless?

"Paul"
You just have some comment for everyone don't you. And sorry for spelling SQUAT wrong. I guess that's why we have people like you that can correct us and make more rude comments.

clrkrr, it seems to me you are the one who makes rude comments like your December 17 remark. Check it out, oh you can’t it was removed by the site staff.

Paul, people like you make me want to stop reading this paper! Get a life, and the word "was" meaning past tense, you are on people about errors, so here is a little English for you.

JL, this is not a paper, it’s a web site. Since you typed it last, “here is a little English for you” should have been “so there is a little English for you” SO THERE IS A LITTLE ENGLISH FOR YOU. Have a nice day.

Paul...What Dec 17th one are you talking about? If it was regarding the whole BigWood Event Center article then I wasn't the only one at the time. I was just stating the truth on that one.
I seems you're the type of person that doesn't come here to comment on the subject in the paper, but comment on everyone else's. I was just sticking up for myself and every other person that you critized for living in a trailer!!

Boy, do you guys get off the subject!! This started because of a fire in a trailer home. Just a little information for you all. This woman has some serious mental problems and Social Services has been "taking care of her" They have done such a good job that she has frozen pipes that are broken and no heat so she did the only thing she could think of and that was to start her grill. Have a little compassion for the less fortunate.

Grandma is correct, this woman does have a serious mental illness, but Grandma all your facts are not. This woman was not even supposed to be in that mobile home. She was moved out of it several months ago and into an apartment because the mobile was no longer in any condition to live in. She repeatedly went back into the mobile after she was moved out and eventually was told she was not allowed on the premises.

Just out of curiousity, what is this woman's mental state, and living arrangements any of any one's busines? Just something to gossip about I spose huh? Well, if you were the one on the end of the gossip chain, it would upset you that people were talking about your personal life all because of a bad jugdement you made. She didn't commit a crime, just was trying to get warm or cook some food. Leave her personal life out of it.
Posted by bucksteel (anonymous) on January 21, 2008 at 1:26 p.m. (Suggest removal)
This person's mental state and living arrangements would certainly be of concern to her neighbors. Does she have children that the neighborhood kids may play with? (would you kids like some carbon monoxide with those hot dogs?) Also, have you seen how close some of the mobile homes are in Green Acres? A fire in a mobile home can quickly become a fire in the neighboring mobile homes. If someone is stupid enough to do what she did, she deserves all of this, and more - maybe it will be a "learning experience" for her, and for others.

I see your point, and agree to some extent, Her personal life should be known to the public,If we were her neighbors. The police department should do their part in protecting the communtiny from those who are unforunate enough not to know better. For those who live in your "Gated communities, with a river running through it" why do you care, I am sure you wouldn't allow your Children to hang out at the trailer park, let alone yourself because Trailer parks are just Trailer trash, and that's why they would go up in flames faster huh? Find something better to do, while Mrs. Whipps finds a new home. Like a sex offender I spose, you can be contacted when they move to your community so you know if you need to "lock up" extra tight at night. Maybe some of you could show some compassion and help the less fortunate live in better homes.

Wow! It never ceases to amaze me how the "socialites" of this town set such a wonderful example for the community and their children. I may be just poor white trailer trash, but one thing I thank the Lord I'm not and that is a SNOB!!!!
Posted by Grandma9 (anonymous) on January 21, 2008 at 7:22 p.m. (Suggest removal)
Thanks Tysmom, I didn't know that. Makes you wonder why the home wasn't locked up tight or moved out of the court. If Ms. Whipps got in that easily my guess kids could go there even easier. There is nothing wrong with living in a trailer that is livable, just as many houses in the area should not be lived in but are. There are many poor people in our community that need a little extra help. We should be glad that she wasn't living on the streets in this cold weather. Are any of you critics ready to take into your home a person in need??

WOW! First, to all of you elites with nothing better to do, I apologize if my spelling and grammer is'nt up to your colligiate standards. As for the matter at hand, I can not believe the audacity of some of you. I moved my family into this town due to being told what an outstanding, caring, and compassionate place this was to raise a family. Sadly, that couldn't be further from the truth. If I allowed some of you to have influence on my children they would never understand the concept of the golden rule. I would be raising selfish, unkind, heartless animals. I'm sure you know the kind, if not, take a look in the mirror. I do not normally condone such harsh critsism, but this is my exception, as for the fact of what crude and callous remarks have been made regarding this article. Instead of smak talking, why don't you lend a helping hand, I do all I can by volunnteering ad donating the extra cash I can. My children have more respect for others than some, they donate all of their unused toys to less fortunate children twice a year. For all of you that are doing what you can, congrats and much kudos to you. As for the rest I guess you can sit idley by and watch the communntity suffer so you will have enough to rant and complain about when somthing else unfortunate happens to a fellow human being.

Alright you people who live in trailer parks have had your comeuppance, you have been mistreated by people who live in houses any they made remarks that were untrue and heartless. There are wonderful people who live in trailers and bad people who live in houses. Fine. But you want to be so honest you must admit some trailer parks are a pig sty and slums. Take a drive in either of the trailer parks in Fergus and the proof is there for all to see. If you people don’t want to be treated like hillbillies don’t live like hillbillies. Take a little pride in where you live, clean up the place, store your charcoal grill for the winter, start parking on the street, fix that sagging screen door, take that old washer and dryer sitting in your yard to the dump. If the problems are related to lack of support by the park owner, how about a rent strike. There are pigs who live in houses also, eventually the city or neighbors take care of the problem. Many times problems in trailer parks are out of sight and out of mind. Also many residents of trailer parks are transient renters who don’t care about appearances and too many unemployed drug addicts. This I know for a fact because of my job.

I will not disagree that some trailers are not pleasing to the eye but, the same applies to certain homes. However, it is an unfair assumption to classify all trailer park residents as hillbillies. For your information Im not defending this matter because I live in a trailer, unbenounced to you I actually live in a house. I defend this matter because its about human decency and respect for those who suffer from an illness, or are just less fortunate.

Well for me personally,I have never been called a hillbilly or been critized about living in a trailerpark expect for on here, so that's whats so sad about this whole story.
I have lived here long enough to know that the guy who owns our park may not be the friendliest person sometimes, but he does his part to make sure this park is kept up. Yes, it doesn't always happen but it doesn't look as bad around here as some places. I do know their are alot of druggies, I personaly know of one that does it while her kid is home but unless the cops are there at the time they can't do much about it. So yes it's kinda the thing where one person does something to mess it up for others which means everyone gets looked upon wrongly. We try to keep our place neat and the inside of the trailer is well taken care of. I wish everyone had the same ideas sometimes on keeping things neat but that's the world we live in, not everyone is the same. Let's just be glad this lady that lived in the trailer has family she can stay with....not many people would even have that!!
